Fun Half-Term Breaks Under £500

family_hol

By the time half term rolls around, most of us are ready for a break. Prices start to go up when so many people want to get away at the same time, and it can sometimes be difficult to track down a reasonably-priced family holiday.

Don’t worry though, we’ve done a little hunting around to help you get inspired and found a few family-friendly breaks that are budget-friendly too. You can keep your costs down further with self-catering, late availability discounts, voucher codes and cashback offers, cut-price entry to local attractions and booking perks such as free ferry tickets.

Cheap camping breaks in France

A holiday park in France might be cheaper than you’d expect because they don’t have their half terms at the same time as the UK. For example, Eurocamp currently has seven nights at La Baume on the French Riviera from £117.50 for a pre-pitched tent that sleeps six, or from £291.50 for a luxury 3-bed caravan with bathroom, deck and air conditioning and all with the amazing cashback rate of up to 4.2% cashback!

La Baume’s near a beach, and has its own waterslides and toddler play area for family fun. The Eurocamp site also displays hundreds of Revoo customer reviews so you can research any potential bookings.

UK seaside holidays

British holiday camps and leisure villages can also turn up a few bargains. Look out for deals on static caravans, lodges, chalets and pods and check the location and facilities to make sure there’s plenty to do. Again, customer reviews can be a great help when you’re choosing.

Find a huge range of options through Haven or Hoseasons with up to 6.3% cashback, or go directly to individual sites such as Woolacombe Bay Holiday Parks, or Trevornick Holiday Park.

For example, three nights in a Golden Sands 2-bedroom Bronze caravan is currently reduced to £216.30. There’s a hot shower, heated bedrooms, access to the family sports area and spa, and it’s close to the beach.

Try a youth hostel

If you thought youth hostels only catered for teenagers and students, take another look. Many now have private family rooms with low prices and great locations. For example, YHA’s Ilam Hall currently still has a few family rooms available for short breaks with prices between £39.00 and £79.00 per night. This Gothic Manor is set in beautiful parkland in the Peak District, perfect for outdoor adventure activities, and just 10 miles away from Alton Towers.

Sign up for the YHA newsletter to hear about their latest offers and snap up bargains as they arrive, including discounted rooms and special deals with local attractions such as Sea Life Centres, Go Ape and the Eden Project.

It’s also worth searching for family-friendly hostel offers via Hostelworld and Hostelbookers, both of which offer cashback on bookings all around the world.

Arrange a house swap

Home exchange holidays can give you a low-cost break with the creature comforts of home. All you need to do is find someone who’d like to trade places with you, which is best done through organised sites such as HomeLink, Love Home Swap, HomeExchange, HomeBase Holidays and Knok.

The top tip for families is to try to partner with people whose children are a similar age to your own, and many sites also include family-friendly travel guides.

The exchanges themselves are usually free, but likely home swap expenses include:

  • site membership
  • travel costs
  • extra home insurance

Joining a site costs between £40 and £115 per year, and you can sometimes find discount codes to reduce the price of site membership plus you can also get up to £23.62 cashback at Home Exchange now!

Disclaimer: Prices and availability and cashback rates are constantly subject to change. Calculations based on a family of four, but some accommodation can sleep up to six people.

Some good ideas there. A holiday would be nice. Insurance was the best deal I had, from Aviva.

Love camping with the family on school holidays - it's easy and cheap. We bought a couple of tents and camping equipment from Wilko and got cashback, making it even cheaper! We've only gone round places in the uk so far but I like the sound of the French Riviera!!
