Waterstones Marketplace

The Waterstones Marketplace is the place to go to browse an extensive range of used, out of print and hard to find books. Thanks to their partnership with Alibris, who are a leader in used and collectible books, as well as music and movies, they can provide access to tens of millions of items stocked by independent sellers from around the world.

If there is an item Waterstones do not have in stock, or cannot easily get in stock, you will be given the option to look on Waterstones Marketplace. Once there, each item will show its availability with other sellers. You will see separate links which will provide details of each item, including its condition, the number of copies available and the price.

Click on a link and you will be taken to the seller's page for the item, where you can read reviews and buy. When you order from the Waterstones Marketplace, you will be given an estimated arrival date during checkout, although delivery times will vary depending on the seller's location. You will not be able to use Waterstones gift cards, vouchers, your loyalty card or any other Waterstones promotions with Marketplace orders, while you will need to create a new sign-in for your Waterstones Marketplace account.

Waterstones Black Friday & Cyber Monday Deals and Sale

Here's what we found happened last year:

The Waterstones Black Friday sale in 2023 was a great opportunity for book lovers to stock up on their favourite titles. With 50% off a wide range of books, including paperback, hardback, and bestsellers, you could have found significant savings. Top bestsellers like ‘The Woman in Me’ by Britney Spears and ‘The Last Devil to Die’ by Richard Osman were also included in the 50% off deal, making it a fantastic chance to pick up some of the year's most popular reads.

From 24th-27th November, Waterstones offered double plus stamps on purchases for members, or triple plus stamps on purchases over £100, adding extra value for loyal customers. So if you were ticking off your gift list in the run up to Christmas, you could save while you shopped. On top of that, there was free UK delivery on orders over £25 meant, for even more reason to bulk out your basket.

We’ve got our fingers crossed for similar offers in this year’s Waterstones Black Friday sale so you can satisfy your inner bookworm. If these deals aren’t enough, did you know you can earn money while you shop online? Join our site for free and earn cashback this Black Friday at Waterstones and thousands of other brands.

Waterstones Features

Company History

Waterstones has a relatively short history having been founded by Tim Waterstone in 1982.

His aim was to build a chain of bookstores offering a wide specialist range, a friendly atmosphere to browse in and knowledgeable staff. The first branch was opened in London. WHSmith bought a share in Waterstones in 1989, while HMV Media (now HMV Group plc) acquired the company nine years later, having already taken over the Dillon's chain.

The following year saw HMV rebrand its portfolio of Dillon's shops to Waterstones. Many Waterstones booksellers have gone on to become successful authors, including Cloud Atlas writer David Mitchell, who worked in the Canterbury store. Others who have launched writing careers include Anna Dale, Stuart Hill, Alan Bissett, Adam Spark, Jeff Noon, Sonia Overall and Oliver Jeffers.

Waterstones Rewards

Earn points, take advantage of exclusive offers and receive expert recommendations when you join a Waterstones' rewards scheme designed for those who love books.

Not only will you earn three points for every £1 you spend in their shops and 1,000 points for every completed stamp card, but there will also be special bonus points offers on selected authors and book series.

You will also be given the chance to be amongst the first to buy exclusive signed and limited edition books, while you can get your hands on discounted tickets to literary events and even benefit from a free upgrade to a large coffee in their cafes. Whoever your favourite author might be, they will tell you first about new releases and send you tailored recommendations curated by their experts.

App

Download the Waterstones app for your Android or iOS device from Google Play or the App Store and use it to help you find a book.

You can search, browse or scan a barcode to read reviews and add a title to your wishlist. The app can locate your nearest Waterstones bookshop, while there will be no need for a physical loyalty card as you can collect Waterstones rewards, redeem them and check your balance on the go through the app. As well as allowing you to manage your rewards points, you will also be able to access offers through it.

Delivery

Waterstones offer free UK delivery (second class) on orders over £20.

If you order before 2pm (Monday-Friday) and the items are in stock, they will be dispatched the same day for delivery within 3-5 working days. Choose first class delivery and your items should arrive within 1-2 working days if they are in stock and you place your order before 2pm (Monday-Friday).

Choose their UK courier service, meanwhile, and in-stock items will be dispatched the same day to arrive within one working day if the order is placed by 2pm (Monday-Friday). They can track the order for you if you use this service.

Goods dispatched on a Friday will normally be delivered the following Monday and those dispatched over the weekend will usually arrive the following Tuesday, while orders dispatched after 2pm may not be collected from their fulfilment centre until the following day. If you select this method, you will need to sign when delivery is made.

Waterstones FAQ

What Time Does Waterstones Close?

Waterstones stores do not all operate the same opening and closing times. To find out the opening times of a particular store or branches near to where you live, just click the ‘Shop Finder’ tab at the top of the Waterstones website homepage. There, you will be able to view stores on a map or consult the A-Z list. Click on a particular store and you will be able to see the daily opening times.

Do Waterstones Accept National Book Tokens?

Waterstones do accept National Book Tokens. However, they can only be used in their shops, so if you would like to spend them when shopping online, you will need to use their Click & Collect service to reserve items. You will then be able to use your vouchers as payment when you go to pick up your order.

Do They Do Student Discount?

Sign up for Student Rewards by downloading their app or signing up to waterstones.com  and then visiting any Waterstones shop with a valid photo student ID. Once you have done this, you will be able to earn 10 points for every £1 you spend. Each point is worth a penny, which you can use to save on future purchases of textbooks or anything else.

Do They Sell Kindles?

You can no longer buy Kindles online at Waterstones. In 2015, Waterstones took the decision to stop selling Amazon’s Kindle ebooks in its stores due to poor sales, having teamed up with them in 2012 to sell the electronic reader in its branches.
