Vans Features

The Vans name comes from brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren who, along with partners Gordon Lee and Serge Delia, opened the Van Doren Rubber Company in California in 1966.

That same year witnessed the birth of the #44 deck shoes, which are now known as the Authentic. By 1974, skateboarders were seen wearing Vans throughout Southern California due to their rugged make-up and sticky sole, while 1976 not only saw the debut of Vans' 'Off the Wall' logo but also the birth of the #95, now known as the Era, which had a padded collar and offered different colour combinations.

The Old Skool (#36) arrived a year later, featuring the now famous Vans sidestripe, while the Vans Classic Slip-On and the Sk8-Hi soon followed. The Sk8-Hi was a skate shoe which protected above the ankle and brought a new look to skate parks everywhere.

At the beginning of the 1980s, the black and white checkerboard pattern became an overnight icon, while their first signature skate shoe, the Steve Caballero, was introduced in 1988. The snowboard boot line was introduced in 1995, while the turn of the 21st century saw the Vault by Vans collection launched, featuring timeless footwear which merged high fashion into their classic silhouettes.

In 2012, Vans introduced the first vulcanised cupsole, with the new WAFFLECUP technology combining the support and durability of a cupsole with the superior feel and grip of the traditional vulcanised shoe.

Vans have been allowing people to customise their footwear since the company was born in 1966 as Paul Van Doren used to make shoes using any fabric customers took into the shop.

Today, you can pick your shoe and choose the colours and pattern to really make them your own, while you can even upload your favourite photo or unique piece of artwork to really ensure they are one of a kind. You can also tailor your shoes based on the elements to ensure they keep you warm and dry.
