very poor at making sure CB is paid at the right rate. The default seems to be the lowest rate so I am having to raise a request each time for the full amount

Up to 12% ? Rubbish! I spend a lot of money of hotels and these guys only pay about 2%. Seems a bit dishonest. Cheaper to ring the hotel direct and ask for discount and no fees!
