• Company History

  Free People was established in the 1970s, when Dick Hayne opened a store in West Philadelphia, USA.

  It was aimed at the young people who lived and shopped there, who were looking for a little of their own freedom in the clothes they wore. As the store grew from one to two, the name was changed to Urban Outfitters. His wife, Meg, came aboard to tend to Urban’s private label division, which supported products exclusive to Urban Outfitters.

  They decided to create a wholesale line, which was so well received that Dick separated the business. The wholesale line took on many personalities, including Bulldog, Ecote, Cooperative and Anthropologie, before new life was breathed into the name Free People in 1984.

  Free People shed its junior image and evolved into a more mature, contemporary women's clothing brand, allowing twenty-something women to appreciate the line of clothing which catered to their intelligence, creativity and individuality. They launched FreePeople.com in 2004 and the UK site followed in 2012.
