Company History

The Beaverbrooks story began in 1919 when the three Adlestone brothers - Isaac, Harry and Maurice - moved to Belfast with the aim of selling fine jewellery and gifts.

They initially sold goods on the street out of a suitcase before opening their first store in the early 1920s. The business quickly expanded to the north of England, opening stores in Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool, Wakefield and Huddersfield, and a new head office was established in Manchester.

By the 1930s, the number of stores had reached 14 and the product range had expanded to include Rolex. In 1932, the Oxford Street store in Manchester became the first Beaverbrooks jewellers. It was named after Lord Beaverbrook, who was a politician renowned for his honesty, integrity and patriotism.

Hard times hit, however, with the outbreak of World War II leading to a shortage of gold and other metals, resulting in the closure of eight of their stores. Isaac Adlestone passed away in 1942 and his brothers took the decision to move the company to St. Anne's on the Sea, just south of Blackpool, where they had all spent time during the war.

The business continued to grow and a first television advertising campaign was launched in the 1970s, while the 1980s saw them become the first multiple high street jewellers to buy loose diamonds, ensuring they offered customers the highest quality.

Beaverbrooks was named Jeweller of the Year in 1992 and 1993, while more stores followed in Scotland and the south of England, including the first in out of town shopping centres. More awards followed, while 2001 saw them launch their first transactional website and open their 50th store.
