The Boots story can be traced back to 1849, when John Boot opened the first first herbalist store in Nottingham, which offered an affordable alternative to traditional medicine.
In 1870, after John had died, his widow, Mary, and their son, Jesse, began trading as M & J Boot, Herbalists, with the sale of herbs being a large part of the business. Seven years later, Jesse took sole control of the business and positioned Boots as the store which offered traditional medicines, which were now becoming the trend, at greatly reduced prices.
Boot & Company Ltd was formed in 1883 and Jesse Boot appointed his first pharmacist a year later. The business was renamed Boots Pure Drug Company Ltd in 1888, while four years later saw the opening of a flagship department-style store in Nottingham, selling such things as perfume, stationery and glass.
The Boots Pure Drug Company Ltd was sold to the United Drug Company of America in 1920, while 1925 saw a 24-hour pharmacy opened at the Boots store in Piccadilly Circus. Jesse's son, John, became chairman of the Boots Pure Drug Company in 1926, while 1933 saw the company revert to British ownership and the 1,000th store open.
Their prestigious yet affordable 'Number Seven' beauty range was launched in 1935, while the first overseas branch opened in Wellington, New Zealand, a year later. Boots became the first UK chemist store to introduce self-service shops in 1951, while 22 years later, they trialled their first optical in-store practice in Nottingham.
This number had risen to 68 by 1986, while as a result of this, Boots Opticians was formed a year later. Their Botanics skincare range was launched in 1995, while their Advantage card followed in 1997 and their e-photo service in 2000.
