  Aveda was founded by Horst Rechelbacher, a pioneer of holistic beauty and a champion of environmental responsibility.

  Born in Austria in 1941 to a herbalist mother and a shoemaker father, he began working in the salon across the street from where he lived at the age of 14. By 17, he was working as a stylist at a prestigious salon in Rome, where his clients included international celebrities. By the age of 20, he had won the European Hairstyling Championship and embarked on a tour of Europe and the United States.

  In 1963, he settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota, following a car accident and opened his own salon, Horst & Friends. Several more followed, but he suffered burnout in the late 1960s. However, he recovered, in part, thanks to herbal remedies prepared by his mother and, following a retreat in India in the 1970s, integrated Ayurveda — the Indian healing tradition — into his lifestyle and salon business model. He adopted holistic thinking and his ideas would revolutionise the beauty industry.

  Aveda was born in 1978, with a vision to offer botanical products to beauty professionals. The first Aveda Institute, which are schools for aspiring beauty professionals, opened in Minneapolis in 1982, while the company was acquired by Estée Lauder Companies in 1997, growing into one of the top brands in the industry, with more than 9,000 Aveda salon and spa locations, and a presence in over 40 countries.
