In 1875, Arthur Lasenby Liberty borrowed £2,000 from his future father-in-law and took a building in Regent Street, London, with three dedicated staff and plenty of ambition.

He had plans for an emporium laden with luxuries and fabrics from distant lands. Indeed, he wanted to metaphorically dock a ship in the city streets. Today, a voyage of discovery awaits at Liberty London, with history hidden amongst cutting-edge design, unexpected edits and beautiful wares from the world’s greatest craftspeople.

Liberty’s collection of items from around the world proved irresistible and it affected social change in interior design and dress. Their magnificent Great Marlborough Street London shop opened in 1924, with the builders having constructed it using timbers of two ancient ‘three-decker’ battleships. Sadly, Arthur died seven years before the building’s completion.

The building is now a heritage listed London icon, while Liberty is famed for its directional design, cultural collaborations and inspiring curation. Their dedicated in-house design studio is still at the core of all they do, hand painting and creating their beautiful prints and reworking finds from their 45,000-strong archive.
