John Smedley Features

Quality

John Smedley are all about quality and they aim to make the finest knitwear in the world.

They achieve this by taking their time when turning the raw material into the finished item of menswear or womenswear. Whether what you are buying is made from cotton, cashmere or Merino wool, you can be sure that they take great care and attention with the fibres they use.

For example, to ensure the finest end product is produced, they source the best raw material a year before it is produced, making sure it adheres to strict specifications. Their Merino comes from the best farmers in New Zealand to ensure that each strand is between 18-19 microns in diameter. The fleece will then be washed and spun into yarn and dyed.

John Smedley's Sea Island cotton is also painstakingly sourced, down to its strength, the climate it is grown in and how fine the finished yarn will be. As for luxury blends, their cashmere is sourced from the Alashan mountains in Mongolia, which is renowned for the highest quality fleece. When blended with the Sea Island cotton, the fibres work perfectly together.

After the initial processes, it will take another 35 stages before a fully formed garment emerges, including seaming, button sewing and hand finishing.

Craftsmanship

When you buy a finished John Smedley garment, you will more than likely not realise how many skilled hands it has passed through before arriving at your door.

Each part of this process, from the design to the final packing, takes the teamwork of many specialised British craftsmen. These include the spot tabber, who will sew the label on to it, the seamstress, who can seam more than 24 garments in an hour, and the knitter, who oversees the 45-foot machine which undertakes the task.

The garment examiner will have thoroughly inspected your garment to make sure it meets John Smedley's high standards, the visible mender may have fixed small faults, such as tiny pulled threads, by hand, while the lockstitcher will have ensured it is the perfect fit for your size and style.

The examiner and folder will have checked it for microscopic faults, the knitting machine operator will have produced any collars, pockets and anything else which does not form part of the main body, while the linker will have sewn the arms, fronts and backs together.

Company History

The history of the John Smedley brand can be traced back to the start of the industrial revolution.

In 1784, their factory in Lea Mills, Derbyshire - where they are still based to this day - began producing simple muslin fabric and spinning cotton. In 1825, they had moved on to producing more complex garments using one of the first ever knitting machines, which helped them create the original Long Johns.

John Smedley began exporting across the globe in 1914 as they established themselves as one of Britain's most famous clothing brands. The 1950s and 1960s saw them become a fashion icon, with their items worn by the likes of the Beatles, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, while by 1980, they had established themselves as the knitwear brand for British designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith.

They opened their first store in 2000, on the iconic Brook Street in London's Mayfair, while 2013 saw them granted the Royal Warrant of Appointment as a "manufacturer of fine knitwear" by the Queen. Just as they did when they started out, John Smedley continue to innovate today and recent years have seen them launch the first ever unisex knitwear collection in the UK.
