For over a century, every year on 8th March, people across the world have united to honour International Women’s Day. Whether it be via a march, a peaceful protest, or through an awareness campaign, the day is a celebration of female achievement.

In the spirit of International Women’s Day, we wanted to raise awareness for a few (of many) inspirational female-owned brands. You can read a little bit about their stories and the important work they are doing below.

Notonthehighstreet

Founded by Holly Tucker and Sophie Cornish around a small kitchen table in 2006, Notonthehighstreet has now become one of the UK’s most renowned online retail businesses. The site acts as a one-stop shop for customers to find unique and bespoke gifts from small creative businesses around the UK.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, Notonthehighstreet has created its ‘Women Supporting Women’ initiative. Ten per cent of the profits made from the collection of exclusive products created by female entrepreneurs, goes towards The Prince’s Trust mentoring scheme. This program supports and empowers young women with a creative and entrepreneurial flair.

Sweaty Betty

Tamara Hill-Norton, the founder and creative director of Sweaty Betty, started the company in 1998 to empower women through fitness and an active lifestyle. With an all-female design team, Sweaty Betty has managed to reshape the activewear industry, making figure flattering sportswear with women in mind.

This year, to celebrate International Women’s Day, Sweaty Betty has launched an exclusive set, including their Power High-Waisted Gym Leggings, Power Frame Gym Vest and a set of two face coverings. All proceeds from the collection will go to the Sweaty Betty Foundation, which in partnership with The Youth Sports Trust, has an aim to support young, disadvantaged women to get active.

SnoozeShade

Cara Sayer invented SnoozeShade after she spotted the number of parents draping blankets, muslin and even coats over their child’s pram at their on-the-go nap time with varying success. She soon realised she needed to create a safe, black-out blind for her daughter’s pram in order to aid sleep and protect her from harmful UV rays. And thus, SnoozeShade was born. With mums and children at the forefront of the brand, SnoozeShade always focuses on safety first and has developed all products to be suitable for newborns unlike other products on the market. Cara has since developed a SnoozeShade for travel cots and car seats.

The Body Shop

In 1976 Dame Anita Roddick launched The Body Shop, a small green shop in Brighton selling just 25 products. From the get-go, Anita encouraged customers to recycle the packaging of products - mostly to help with stock levels! However to this day, this sustainable spirit continues to be reflected in the brands’ ethos of protecting the planet. The brand now consists of over 2500 stores worldwide and boasts over 300 products. Anita continues to be an activist through and through, pushing for social change and human rights. Her incredible brand has been built by empowering women through every business decision and product.

The Body Shop celebrates International Women’s Day all year round with their Community Fair Trade programme. Since 1994, The Body Shop have been fighting for female equality by sourcing handcrafted shea for products from the Tungteiya Women’s Association in Ghana. The Global Shea Alliance provides the women with an independent income and growing confidence amongst their community.
