The very first youth hostel was opened in Germany in 1909 and, following a trip there 20 years later, a small group of pioneers opened the first in Britain.
The national organisation was established a year later and, by Easter 1931, there were 11 hostels. The fact YHA offered affordable accommodation was an antidote to the poor air quality, cramped housing and harsh inner city life at the time. It provided the working class with opportunities to spend time in the fresh air and open countryside.
The number of YHA members doubled during the Second World War, while it went through significant changes in the 1980s as the needs of the modern day traveller began to alter. They introduced smaller, private rooms and improved facilities, while they adopted a professional management structure.
While they have changed with the times, they have always stayed true to their core mission and values, which is to inspire all, especially children, to broaden their horizons and help them gain knowledge and independence through new experiences, adventures and discoveries.
