  Hughes was founded in Suffolk in 1921 by Frank Hughes, who had trained as an electrical engineer.

  Until 1928, when Hughes bought his first shop, the company rewound industrial electrical motors for the fishing fleet of Lowestoft. However, after buying the shop, which his family lived over, Hughes began to build and sell radios.

  The business was incorporated in 1946, but Frank Hughes passed away the following year, leaving the company to his children - Peter, Phyllis and Jim. Hughes remains a family business to this day, with Robert and Jeremy Hughes now the third generation to be at the brand's helm.

  Throughout the years, they have always been quick to embrace and introduce new technologies, such as televisions and innovative kitchen appliances and, by making them available for rental, they made them affordable to many more people.
