How to view the 2015 Solar Eclipse

eclipse

If you’ve not been able to get your hands on a pair of eclipse viewing glasses ready for the big day tomorrow, there are other ways of seeing this rare phenomenon. It is strongly advisable that you don’t look directly at the eclipse as this can cause serious damage to the eyes and even strong sunglasses won’t be enough to protect you.

A pinhole camera is probably the easiest and safest way to view the eclipse without glasses and is relatively simple to make.
All you need shoe box (or similar) some tin foil, a sheet of white paper, some tape, a knife and finally a pin.

To make this camera, you’ll need to cut a hole about an inch wide and an inch high at one end of the box. Cover this with one sheet of foil and tape it in place. Then simply pop one pin hole in this sheet of foil, here you have your projector.

Then you need to tape the piece of paper to the inside of the other end of the box, directly opposite where you have put the foil. This is where the projection of the eclipse will be shown.

Next, on the side of the box, you need to cut another hole. Again about an inch wide and high, this is where you’ll view the eclipse through so you need to make sure this is in a position where you can see the paper you previously put in place.

You now have your finished pinhole camera.

To view the eclipse you just need to stand with your back toward the sun with the pin hole facing the sun, you should be able to look through the hole and see the projection of the sun on the piece of paper inside the box.

If you can’t get your hands on a box and fancy something similar, you can use a piece of card with a small pin hole in and a piece of paper, hold about 1m away from the pin hole to project the image of the sun on to the paper, again face away from the sun with the pin hole facing the sun and the piece of paper in front of you where the image will be projected.
