The first Ann Summers store, in London's Wardour Street, was given to brothers David and Ralph Gold in 1971 as a debt repayment by a fellow businessman.

The shop was called Ann Summers due to the fact that previous owner Michael 'Dandy Kim' Caborn-Waterfield thought it sounded like an English rose. He even persuaded his former mistress, Annice Goodwin, to change her name to Ann Summers in exchange for a directorship. In the hands of the Gold brothers, the business grew and the total number of stores had reached six by 1980.

A year later, David's daughter, Jacqueline, joined her father's business and when she attended a Tupperware party, the idea of the Ann Summers party was born. The first Ann Summers catalogue was launched in 1982, and with business booming, the product offering was expanded to include a bridal collection of wedding lingerie.

They also launched a men's range, while their now iconic Rampant Rabbit arrived on the scene in 1991 on its way to sex toy stardom. Jacqueline Gold's rise up the company ladder continued in 1993 when she became Ann Summers' CEO -- the same year they launched their pink concept store, which was designed to be more female friendly and which resulted in a 50% increase in turnover.

They introduced a plus-size collection of lingerie in 1995 and began trading online in 1999, while 2000 saw them take over Knickerbox and open their first store in Ireland. The first European Ann Summers store opened in Valencia, Spain, in 2005, followed three years later by their new flagship store in London's Oxford Street. The brand now boasts 138 stores, while they throw 7,000 parties each week.
