A family run factory in the Marche region if Italy, on the east coast, has been at the heart of Oliver Sweeney shoes for more than 20 years.

The area, which sits between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea, is renowned for its shoe-making tradition, making it an ideal place for the Oliver Sweeney factory. Everything they do is handcrafted, resulting in the detail being different every time. However, the majority of their shoes have always been made in this same factory.

They take great care to ensure only the finest components are used to make their footwear, such as calf leather from Tuscany for their linings, the softest deerskin from New Zealand for their uppers or durable sole bend from Argentinian steers.

The brand's master clicker, who is based in the factory, uses his bare hands and a knife to cut the leather so he can feel it as he works. It is also the details which make Oliver Sweeney shoes unique, such as the decorative punching and the O and S on the heel, which are applied and stitched by hand. Each shoe is finished by hand, with many of their finishes incapable of being replicated by machine.

While Oliver Sweeney are rightly renowned for their footwear, they offer much more than just shoes.

You can browse their extensive men's clothing collection, which features everything from jackets, knitwear and polo shirts to trousers and jeans. A Sweeney tattoo allows you to make a unique statement with your shoes.

Simply choose the shoe, boot or accessory you want to be tattooed, although they recommend doing it on tan leather as other colour choices will not produce the desired effect. You will then need to decide on a design, which can be anything from your initials to a bespoke pattern.

If you want to, you can see their archive and take a look at what other people have requested. Just fill in the tattoo form you will find on their website, including as much information as possible, or contact customer services.

Once they have received your order, the Oliver Sweeney team will contact you to finalise the design and give you a quote. If you are happy, their tattooist-in-chief will tattoo your item, which will be delivered to you within two weeks of your order date. All tattoos are created by hand using a real tattoo gun and ink.

Oliver Sweeney can help you look after your new shoes as they offer a wide range of care products.

These include polishes and brushes to keep your footwear in tip-top condition, as well as shoe trees to help maintain the shape of your shoes. Buy yourself a shoe care box packed with care essentials, while you can also get your hands on replacement laces and shoes horns which will help when taking your shoes on and off.

Oliver Sweeney also provide a re-crafting service, which will bring your shoes back to life. They will employ the same skills and techniques used when they were first made. Your shoes will be assessed and placed on their original lasts. The soles and heels will then be removed and remade using their original construction and factory components. You can opt for the resoling service or there is a resoling and Sweeney shine option, which will see them polished.
