• Company History

  The story of Musto the brand began in 1964, when Keith Musto was chosen as part of the British sailing team for the Tokyo Olympics.

  He was partnered with Tony Morgan in the heavyweight Flying Dutchman boat, but was too light and short. The duo realised that the only way to win gold was to be fitter than their opponents and undertook fitness training every day, which was unheard of at the time.

  They ended up winning the silver medal and, having sailed in Guernsey sweaters and trousers for years, they realised this needed to change, so they set about producing their own innovative sailing gear. Musto began making sails with Edward Hyde in an old World War II prisoner of war hut in Essex under the name of Musto & Hyde Sails.

  However, Musto soon began making technical sailing clothing, teaching himself the manufacturing process and paying his wife in chocolate each day to machine and do all of the typing. He split from Musto & Hyde in 1980 and he and his team soon became manufacturers and wholesalers of the best sailing kit available.

  Musto soon realised this technology would work for other sports too and they now combine performance fabrics with traditional styles to make equestrian and shooting clothing.

  Musto have been innovators from the start and helped promote the concept of a three-layer system years before the idea of using multiple thin layers to provide warmth, protection and freedom of movement became popular.

  The idea really took off in a Whitbread Round the World Race when sailor Cornelis van Rietschoten used it in the Southern Ocean to wick away sweat. Following tragic accidents in the event, race managers approached Musto in 1990 to invent a new drysuit which would need to extend survival times from 15 minutes to two hours in the coldest waters of the world.

  This was tested in 1992 and their drysuits today offer survival times of up to three hours in waters as cold as five degrees Celsius. They have also helped to create an extra tough Gore-tex Pro membrane, which forms the core of their HPX range of Musto jackets and more.
