BT is the oldest communications company in the world.
Its story can be traced all the way back to The Electric Telegraph Company, which was incorporated in 1846 and was the first company to develop a nationwide communications network. Surviving telecommunications companies were eventually transferred to state control under the Post Office.
Later, they became a privatised company - British Telecommunications plc - which was the forerunner of today's global communications company, BT Group plc. In 1912, the General Post Office became the monopoly supplier of the telephone service. In 1969, the Post Office ceased to be a government department and was established as a public corporation, although it retained its telecommunications monopoly.
It was recommended in 1977 that the two main services be split into individual corporations, resulting in Post Office Telecommunications being renamed British Telecom in 1980, though it remained part of the Post Office. Soon after, the first steps were taken to introduce competition into the UK telecommunications industry, in terms of both the public switched telephone network and the apparatus supply market.
British Telecom was privatised in 1984, when more than 50% of shares were sold to the public. All of the government's remaining shares were sold in 1993, two years after the duopoly which had been shared by British Telecom and Mercury Communications in the UK since 1983 ended. A new trading name of BT was unveiled in 1991, while Openreach opened for business in 2006 to manage the UK access network on behalf of the telecommunications industry.
