Barker and Stonehouse were set up just after the end of the Second World War in 1946 by two RAF men.

Charles Barker and Alex Stonehouse wanted to create a furniture store which would offer a touch of style to post-war Britain. The brand was set up in the north east with their first Stockton-on-Tees store, followed by another in Middlesbrough. A Newcastle store was established, while shops were also set up in Gateshead, Darlington, Hull, Knaresborough, Leeds and Nottingham. They made their move to the south of the country in 2013, with a London store opening in Battersea.

Stores in Hove and Guildford came next, as well as outlets in Middlesbrough and York. In 1974, Alex Stonehouse’s side of the business was bought out by Charles Barker's son, Richard, who is now company chairman. While times and styles have changed since 1946, their aim remains to help people improve their homes. They're now the UK's leading independent family-owned furniture store.
