The Ralph Lauren Corporation started selling ties in 1967. Lauren was 28 and working for tie manufacturer Beau Brummell when he persuaded the company's president to allow him to start his own line.

Having an interest in sports, he named his first menswear line Polo in 1968 and made deliveries to stores himself from the showroom in the Empire State Building in New York. The following year saw his men's line being sold exclusively in Bloomingdale's department store in Manhattan.

His first freestanding store was opened on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills in 1971, while the first women's collection was launched a year later. In 1977, the Ralph Lauren Corporation introduced a signature cotton men's polo shirt in various colours which featured the polo player logo on the chest.

The following year saw a men's and women's fragrance launched, while the company entered the European market in 1981 with the opening of the first freestanding store in the West End of London. In June 1997, the company became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange, while the company launched its website and online shop three years later.
