Giorgio Armani the man is now one of the world's most iconic clothing designers, who soared to popularity in America in the 1980s thanks to his 'power suits'.

Born in Italy, he decided to drop out of university after completing his military service and went to work for the famous Milan department store La Rinascente. He became a designer at Nino Cerruti but, with some encouragement from his friend Sergio Galeotti, also undertook freelance design work for other companies.

The friends became business partners and set up S.p.A. in 1975, with their first collection, a men's clothing line, launching a year later. A women's collection followed in 1977 and his clothes were seen as being revolutionary, featuring a more natural fit and a subtle colour palette.

While his clothes were popular in Europe, America did not take notice until the 1980s - a decade which saw Richard Gere wear his clothes in the film American Gigolo and him supply much of the wardrobe for the hit TV series Miami Vice. During this period, wearing Armani was a symbol of success and the business grew.

Galeotti died in 1985, but Armani continued to expand the brand, opening his first restaurant in 1989. By the end of the 1990s, there were more than 200 Armani stores worldwide, while 2005 saw them launch their first haute couture line. Today, Armani can be found in the world's major department stores, plus 500 exclusive retail stores, while away from the clothing, the first Armani hotel was opened in Dubai in 2010.
