Virgin Atlantic Features

The Virgin Story

The story of what is now the UK's second largest long-haul airline can be traced back to the 1980s.

In 1984, Richard Branson, the owner of record label Virgin Records, announced that a high-quality, value for money airline would be operating within three months. True to his word, Virgin Atlantic Airways was born three months later, and by the end of the decade, they had flown more than a million passengers.

They launched their first super economy service, now known as Premium Economy, in 1992, while the 1990s also saw them expand their fleet and network of routes.

The revolutionary Upper Class Suite - offering the longest and most comfortable flat bed and seat in business class - was launched in 2003, while by the end of 2007, they had opened the Virgin Clubhouse at London Heathrow - their flagship lounge - and updated the check in facilities at the same airport.

In 2008, meanwhile, they operated a pioneering biofuel demonstration on a 747 between London and Amsterdam, which was the world's first commercial airline flight using biofuel.

Earn Rewards With The Flying Club

With the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, you can earn miles based on how far you are flying, your ticket type and your membership tier.

These miles can then be spent on reward flights, upgrades and more. There are three tiers - Red, Silver and Gold - which you can move through by earning tier points with every flight you take with Virgin Atlantic or selected partner airlines.

As well as being able to use your miles to save on future flights, you can gain access to No.1 Lounges, save on airport parking and Virgin holidays, take advantage of premium check in, take extra luggage and freshen up with a shower or spa treatment in their Heathrow Revivals lounge.

How To Upgrade Your Seat

If you are going on a special holiday, there are various ways in which you can upgrade your Virgin Atlantic Airways seat.

If you have booked a flight, you are able to upgrade your seat online via the My Booking link. If you are a Flying Club member, meanwhile, you can use your miles to upgrade your cabin. The number of miles you will need will depend on the destination you are travelling to.

You will find a handy table on the Virgin Atlantic website which will show you the number of miles you will need to spend for a round trip to upgrade the seat you have purchased to one in Premium Economy or Upper Class during their standard season.

Alternatively, you can bid for a cabin upgrade using Your Bid - their online upgrade auction. Just tell them how much you are willing to pay for an upgrade and, if accepted, they will contact you by email. You can make changes to your bid, or cancel it if you change your mind, right up until two days before your flight - as long as it has been accepted.

Check In However You Like

You can check in for all Virgin Atlantic flights online and it opens 24 hours before the scheduled departure, closing 70 minutes before.

During the check-in process, you will be able to view and change seats or upgrade your seat, as well as add baggage, add Advanced Passenger Information or issue your boarding pass.

Their mobile app, which you can download from the App Store or Google Play, allows you to check in on the go, while you can, of course, check in when you get to the airport.

Their check in desks close an hour before departure, while some airports also have automated check in kiosks. If you checked in online but were unable to print your boarding pass, you will be able to print one off at their automated kiosks or ask a member of staff to do so at their bag drop desks.
