The North Face might be named after the coldest, most unforgiving side of a mountain, but its story began in San Francisco's North Beach neighbourhood in 1966, where two hiking enthusiasts decided to set up a small mountaineering store.
The shop quickly became known as The North Face and sold performance climbing and backpacking equipment. In 1968, they moved to the other side of San Francisco Bay and began designing and manufacturing their own brand of technical mountaineering products.
They gained a following among outdoor athletes and began sponsoring expeditions. By the early 1980s, they had added extreme ski clothing to their range and by the end of the decade, they were the only supplier in the United States to offer high-performance outerwear, ski wear, sleeping bags, backpacks and tents.
The 1990s saw them enter the sportswear market with the launch of Tekware, which was designed to provide rock climbers, backpackers, trail runners and those who love the outdoors with the ultimate in fit and function. As the new millennium approached, The North Face launched their own range of trekking and trail running shoes and they continue to push the boundaries of innovation and the limits of design to this day.
The North Face's range of clothing offers a variety of technologies.
ThermoBall is a new synthetic alternative to down which is lightweight and provides phenomenal warmth in cold and wet conditions, while FlashDry fabric technology is engineered to act like a second skin against the body, pushing moisture to the surface.
Goose Down Fill will ensure you are well insulated in lightweight clothing, while if you are looking for waterproof jackets or boots, breathable GORE-TEX items will provide protection from rain and snow. Their DryVent fabrics are engineered to be fully waterproof, windproof and breathable, while PrimaLoft is used in their thermal clothing and uses natural and synthetic insulation to retain heat in winter.
Polartec thermal fabrics are available in various and unique textures and weights, while their Thermal Kinetic Advancement (TKA) Fleece are fabrics created with superior insulation and wear-resistance. The Apex Flex GTX range is ultra-soft and will keep you impossibly dry, while WINDSTOPPER soft shells offer total wind protection and maximum breathability.
You will also find WindWall fabrics, which are engineered to greatly reduce the effects of windchill, while Xtra Foam shoes and boots provide cushioned support for hiking, trail running or tackling mountains. Ventrix jackets will provide the ultimate in insulation technology, which will keep the body warm without having to worry about overheating, while the FuseForm range will allow you to stay dry and move seamlessly.
Should you grow out of your clothes, wear them out or just decide it is time to buy something new, The North Face can help ensure that unwanted items do not end up in landfill.
Their Clothes the Loop scheme gives their customers the chance to drop off any clothing or footwear they no longer want at their stores. Regardless of their condition or brand, any clothes dropped off in their collection bins will be sent to their recycling centre, where they will be carefully sorted based on more than 400 categories.
They will then either be repurposed for reuse in order to extend their life or recycled into raw materials for use in products such as insulation, stuffing for toys and fibres for new clothing. Those who take part in Clothes the Loop will be given a coupon to use on their next purchase, while any proceeds will go to national charities in every country the scheme is run.
