How The Royal Mint is supporting NHS staff

While famous for their coins, bullion and gifts, the team at The Royal Mint has undertaken a new challenge during these unprecedented times — developing and manufacturing a medical visor to support NHS staff in their fight against coronavirus.

Engineers at their state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Llantrisant, Wales, were keen to support NHS workers in any way possible, and began searching for medical equipment which could be easily produced on site.

As a result, they’re now making 5,000 medical visors per day and will initially prioritise supplying NHS Wales, which supported the development and approval of the visors. However, as manufacturing increases, they will supply more NHS Trusts.

While their normal production of coins, bullion and gifts has been scaled back, you can still buy from their wide range of products, including collections featuring childhood characters like Peter Rabbit, dinosaurs, royalty, the military, great Britons, TV & film and quintessentially British themes, including their very own NHS coin.

If you’re keen to add to your collection while you have more time on your hands, we’re giving you the chance to do so for less.

Until midnight on April 19th, we’re offering you an exclusive 10% cashback on base coin purchases. You can also earn 4% cashback on silver products, 2% on gold products and 1% on platinum products.

Supporting the NHS

In their bid to help the NHS during this challenging time, the team at The Royal Mint found a rudimentary design for a medical visor online, and began developing high specification prototypes — turning the concept into an approved design in just 48 hours.

In addition, they have been supplying the NHS with other essential PPE equipment from their stores, and offering project management support.

The medical visors are fully BSI approved and, to date, more than 12,000 are in use at hospitals across Wales.

Leighton John, director of operations for The Royal Mint, said: “My sister works for the NHS and it really focuses your mind on the challenges they are facing, and the opportunity we have to support them.

“Our first priority is always the wellbeing of our staff, and we have transformed our visitor attraction, The Royal Mint Experience, into an emergency production line for medical visors.

“The site ensures that employees are safely distanced, and allows us to keep manufacturing jobs open whilst our normal production is scaled back.

“We are extremely proud that over 12,000 medical visors are already in use at hospitals across Wales.”

The Royal Mint has worked with its key suppliers — including Brammer, TJ Morgan and Technical Foam Services — to source the components needed to make the visors.

The world’s largest export mint

Royal Mint Production

As a business, The Royal Mint is no stranger to diversity and reinvention.

As well as producing the nation’s coinage and a full range of commemorative coins, plus offering many investment opportunities with their bullion options, they also now produce jewellery on site for the first time in their 1,100-year history — creating modern classics inspired by iconic coin designs.

Based in the Tower of London for more than 500 years, by 1812 The Royal Mint had moved to premises on London’s Tower Hill.

In 1967, the building of a new Royal Mint began on its current site in south Wales to accommodate the minting of UK decimal coinage.

Today, The Royal Mint is the world’s largest export mint, supplying coins to the UK and overseas countries.

A haven for coin collectors

The Royal Mint produces a wide variety of commemorative coin collections, with recent designs featuring legendary rock band Queen and the loveable Peter Rabbit.

Making a commemorative coin takes skill and care. Each has to be carefully struck up to three times, depending on the metal, in order to create a superbly detailed finish.

This makes them both desirable and beautiful, and an ideal addition to any collection.

Enjoyed by people of all ages, coin collecting is a hobby that can provide a lifetime of fulfilment and a legacy to be handed on to each new generation.

It also offers some light relief and enjoyment during these challenging times.

So, whether you’d like to start collecting or add to your existing one, now’s the perfect time to buy thanks to the fact we’re offering up to an exclusive 10% cashback until April 19th.
