SUNDERLAND
Completing the ‘shouldn’t have been in a relegation battle’ trio, Sunderland were another side whose league position surprised many. Having finished in 13th the previous season, it looked like Martin O’Neill’s side might make inroads into the top ten. But just as with Newcastle, something just didn’t click for O’Neill and the manager was sacked at the end of March.
Italian manager Paulo Di Canio came in, having left Swindon Town, and his passionate, dictatorial style had the desired impact as the Mackems just managed to avoid the drop by three points.
This season could be very different. Italian Winger Emanuelle Giaccherini has signed from Juventus and American striker Jozy Altidore has also arrived at the club – two players with international experience who should improve the club’s fortunes. Expect a mid-table finish for Di Canio’s side.
The Black Cats will face both Manchester sides live on Sky Sports. They take on United on the 5th of October and City on the 10th of November, both live on Sky Sports 1 HD.
