What is a Greggs Outlet?

A Greggs Outlet is a discount Greggs store where unsold food items are sold at a much cheaper price. We’re talking about reductions as big as 75%, which could take the price of your cheese and onion bake to as little as 50p, or your chocolate cookie to just 28p.

These stores are located in areas where food poverty is at its highest. Their purpose is to help people living in these areas get access to both hot and cold food at cheaper prices.

And they’ve been around longer than you might think; the first outlet-type store from Greggs came back in 1974. This original ‘second-day store’ was located in Newcastle’s West End, as a means to give people in the area access to food at a lower price.

And as well as bringing affordable food to those living in more socially deprived areas of the UK, this initiative also drastically reduces the amount of waste created by the fast food chain.

Because all of their food is made fresh each day, there are lots of Greggs products that end up getting thrown away if they’re not sold while at their freshest. This leftover day-old food is now being sent to Greggs Outlets to be sold to customers at a heavily discounted price.

This means you can get a huge number of menu items at a lower price than you would at a normal Greggs store. As a lot of the food sold at Greggs Outlet shops is from the previous day's stock, it may no longer be at optimum freshness, but the food will always be safe to eat.

This means you could be getting exactly the same item, in the same condition, for a fraction of the price. What’s not to like?

Greggs are going beyond just helping you save money on food

Greggs pledge to reduce food waste while also working to help tackle poverty, hunger and deprivation in communities across the UK. They’re achieving this through three initiatives, the first being these Greggs Outlet stores.

The second way Greggs are helping those in need is by donating excess food to partner charities that can make good use of it. They also give a portion of their profits from their Outlets to The Greggs Foundation, which is used to help local community groups, such as Breakfast Clubs.

The Greggs Foundation operates 800 Breakfast Clubs across the UK, giving wholesome, free breakfasts to 49,500 schoolchildren every school day. This means children in deprived areas and from low-income families can start their morning in the best possible way.

If you want to help this cause, you can donate 25p next time you visit your local Greggs. Just let your server know you’d like to donate a breakfast for 25p and they’ll add the donation to your purchase.
