What type of coffee machine should I buy?
There are at least 10 different types of coffee machines available on the market, and each one has its own distinct method of making your coffee too, which means the shopping process can get pretty complicated.
If you're not sure which type of machine would suit you best, check out our breakdown of the main features of the most popular machines below.
Bean-to-cup coffee machines
The clue’s in the name with this one… a bean-to-cup coffee machine will grind, press and brew coffee beans to make your cup of coffee. These machines are mostly digital and automated, so you don’t need to worry about remembering any complicated steps.
Pros
They usually offer a wide variety of high-quality drinks options
They’re very easy to use and make drinks quickly
Cons
They tend to be more expensive due to their advanced features
Can be trickier to clean if they have an inbuilt milk system

Espresso machines
Espresso machines take a little more work than bean-to-cup machines. They use high pressures and temperatures to produce stronger coffee shots.
While some espresso machines have some automated features, most come with an external portafilter which you’ll need to pack with ground coffee (known as tamping), and then lock into place.
Depending on the spec, an espresso coffee machine might have functions to add hot water and milk to your espresso, while others will just give you the espresso shot on its own.
Pros
Espresso machines can make a stronger, tastier coffee than some other machines
This method will appeal to coffee enthusiasts as the process of making a drink is more hands-on
Cons
They’re more technical and time-consuming to use than bean-to-cup machines
Their functions can sometimes be limited, depending on how much you’re willing to spend

Single-serve coffee makers
Most single-serve makers use coffee capsules or pods containing the exact amount of coffee required for one drink.
Just insert your chosen pod into the machine’s pod compartment and select your desired strength (this dictates how much water the machine will add to the coffee).
Pros
Single-serve pod machines are very easy to use with minimal clean-up required
Cons
Coffee pods are made using both plastic and aluminium, which makes them very difficult to recycle

If you want the convenience of a pod machine without the environmental impact, you could buy a reusable metal coffee pod. All you have to do is fill it with your choice of ground coffee, close the lid, and pop in your machine like normal.
Make sure you weigh up if it’s worth going to all this effort, or whether you’d be better off with an espresso or bean-to-cup machine instead.
Filter coffee machines
Filter coffee machines use gravity rather than pressure, which makes them different from the machines already mentioned in this guide.
They allow water to slowly drip through coffee grounds and then through a filter, which tends to give the coffee a more intricate and subtle flavour.
Pros
You can get some very cheap filter coffee machines
Some come with a built-in timer for scheduling coffee ahead of time, and a heat plate to keep it hot
You can usually brew a lot of coffee in one go, making them great for bigger households
Cons
The machines with timers will cost more
Filter coffee takes a while to brew, so they’re not ideal if you often need your beverage in a hurry
You can't make anything other than a filter coffee, which means no espressos, cappuccinos or lattes

Once you understand all the different types of coffee machines, Black Friday planning can truly begin. With a clearer idea of the type you want, it'll be easier for you to find coffee makers with the best value for money on Black Friday itself.
If you like to have a more hands-on approach to making your coffee, a manual espresso machine might be the option for you. Or, if you want a fully automatic coffee machine that involves minimal effort, you could look for bean-to-cup coffee machine deals.
Other low-effort machines include pod coffee machines, although these have a bigger environmental impact and sometimes cost more to run due to the price of single-serve coffee capsules.
How to make the most of this year’s Black Friday coffee machine deals
Getting the best value for your money when shopping online on Black Friday is truly a fine art. There are countless retailers competing with each other to entice you in, but the price of the coffee machine isn’t the only thing you need to be considering.
Check out our list of handy tips and tricks below to make sure you’re clued up on how to make your money go further this November.
Be sure about what you need from your coffee machine
The price you pay for your machine will to some extent be dictated by the features you’re looking for and the level of effort you want to put into making your coffee. Are you all about convenience when it comes to your caffeine fix or is flavour the ultimate deciding factor?
There’s no point in buying the cheapest filter coffee machine on the market if you tend to need your coffee in a rush. And on the flip side, there’s also not much point in spending hundreds on the fanciest bean-to-cup appliance with an inbuilt milk frother if you only ever drink espresso coffee.

Being clear on which features are actually essential for you will help you to make wiser purchasing decisions when it really matters.
If it helps, write down on a piece of paper exactly what you want from your coffee machine. That way, you can refer back to it when you’re looking through Black Friday deals, to make sure you don’t get sidetracked.
Once you know what type of machine you want, do some research into the brands you might want to buy from. If you know how much your ideal coffee machine usually costs, you’ll be better able to see if a particular Black Friday discount is actually any good.
Do a quick search online to see what deals each retailer was offering during November 2024 and use this to help you plan.
Get a better deal when you buy an older model
If you’re not too bothered about having the absolute latest barista technology, you could still get a really great coffee machine while avoiding the hefty price tag.
Older coffee machine models are usually cheaper than their newer counterparts anyway. When you look for a coffee maker on Black Friday, the price difference will be even more noticeable.
During sale events, retailers will sell older models at a cheaper price to make way for newer models. If you’re willing to consider buying last year’s release instead of the absolute latest model from your chosen brand, you could save money.
Don’t trust them? Don’t shop with them
Depending on what make and model you go for, your new coffee machine might cost you a fair bit of money.
Whenever you’re parting with a significant amount of cash, you should always be careful to ensure you’re shopping with brands and retailers you know you can trust.
If you’ve never heard of a particular brand before, read up on them before you buy your appliance. If you find a load of negative reviews or their website doesn’t look legit, it’s probably best to avoid them.
There’s no reason to shop with a company that looks dodgy when there are so many dependable retailers to choose from.

Get clued up on returns policies and warranties
Make sure you check each retailer's returns policy before you buy your coffee machine. Find out if they accept returns, and if they do, get clued up on how long you have to return items if you change your mind.
The same goes for their warranty policy, which is particularly important for big purchases. If your coffee machine arrives damaged or faulty, you'll be legally entitled to a refund or exchange.
A good way to see if a retailer’s returns and faulty goods policies are up to scratch is to check if they’re a Which? Recommended Provider (WRP).

Which? will withhold WRP status from retailers who don’t meet their criteria for staff helpfulness, value for money, and the clarity and correctness of their returns and faulty goods policies online.
