Company History

British entrepreneur Alan Brazier founded Vax in 1977 in his home town of Droitwich, Worcestershire.

Having won a contract to clean Newport Pagnell motorway services, he soon came to the conclusion that the carpet cleaning equipment available - which consisted of boiling water and a board to scrape off the grease - could do with some improvement.

This prompted him to get to work on his first prototype. He came up with a forerunner to Vax's iconic orange tub, which was made using a water heater, a shower pump and a milk churn. After some tinkering with his design, he devised a unique three-in-one machine which could wash, suck up spillage and vacuum carpets.

He patented his invention, which became known as the Vax 101, and decided to manufacture it himself. The carpet cleaner was first launched to UK homes in 1979 and, eight years later, the Vax tub become the best-selling vacuum cleaner in the country. By 1995, you could buy a Vax in nearly 50 different countries worldwide, while in 2014, they launched the Air Cordless, a full-sized cordless vacuum which was powerful to clean your whole home for 50 minutes.
