WorldRemit Send Money Internationally

How to send money with WorldRemit

Thanks to WorldRemit, it’s fast, simple and secure to make international money transfers. No matter which of the available methods you choose, you can send money online with them in a few simple steps. Is WorldRemit available in the UK? It certainly is. Sign up with WorldRemit and set up your account using your email address on their website or app.

Once you've done this, you can start a transfer. Just select the receive country, enter the amount of money you’d like to send and choose the receive method. If you want to send money to Ghana from the UK, for example, you’ll get to see the fees and exchange rate upfront on the WorldRemit UK website, before you complete the transaction.

All you need to do then is enter the receiver’s details, so it’s important to keep that information ready. These details will depend on the receive method you choose to send your money. When it comes to paying for your transfer, you can either do so by bank transfer to the WorldRemit account or by using a debit/credit card for faster delivery.

WorldRemit Features

Ways to send money internationally

How much a money transfer will cost you as a WorldRemit UK customer and how long it’ll take will depend on the receiving country, the receive method and how you pay for it.

There are currently four different receive methods available on WorldRemit. The first is airtime top-up to prepaid phones. An airtime top-up is a payment made by WorldRemit to send a mobile recharge to a recipient’s prepaid mobile phone call plan. Airtime top-ups sent via WorldRemit are usually instant, or within a few minutes. Just select the region your recipient lives in to see if airtime top-up is an option there.

You’ll be asked to enter the recipient’s mobile phone number twice to try and avoid money being sent to the wrong person due to a mistyped number. If you mistype the mobile phone number twice, the transfer will go ahead and there’s no way to reclaim it. The second option is a bank transfer, which will allow you to send money abroad directly to a bank account. All you’ll need are the receiver’s details. How long does each money transfer take?

Well, these international bank transfers could be instant, or they could take 1-2 working days. You’ll see when you select the country. Likewise, the transfer fee will also depend on the country you’re sending to, although WorldRemit won’t charge any fees on your very first transfer with them. When it comes to the maximum amount you can send, this depends on the country you’re sending to, as well as the country you’re sending from, the payment option you choose and their local partner’s transaction limits.

More ways to send money abroad

The next option is a cash pickup, for which you’ll be sending money to be collected in cash by your receiver at any of their pickup locations.

If you want to send a cash pickup in Zimbabwe, for instance, funds are usually available to pick up instantly, although in some instances, they may require additional information from you for your transaction to be processed. When it comes to receiving the money from a cash pickup transfer, the recipient will need a valid photo ID which shows their full name, which must match the details supplied on the transaction, so check before sending.

They’ll also need the transaction reference, which will have been sent to the recipient by SMS once the payment is available. Alternatively, you can share this information with the recipient when the pick-up is ready for collection, via your online account. The recipient will not be charged by WorldRemit or any partner network when collecting money as cash.

The final option is mobile money, which is an instant transfer to your receiver’s registered mobile money account number. This service, which is basically an electronic wallet, is available in a wide range of countries. It allows its users to store, send and receive money through their mobile phone. It's a popular service — and a great alternative to bank accounts — due to the safe and easy electronic payments.

It's as simple as sending a text. Funds held in mobile money accounts are protected by local financial regulations, much like bank accounts are. You’ll need to make sure the recipient has a mobile money account. If you have their details, you can log in to WorldRemit and choose mobile money as the service you wish to send with.

Payment methods for international transfers

You have a choice of ways to pay for WorldRemit money transfers, though that choice may depend on where you’re sending your money from.

You should also be aware that credit card payments may incur a fee from your card issuer, which could affect the received amount. The first option is a bank deposit, which will transfer money from your bank account to WorldRemit’s account. How long it takes depends on where you’re sending the money. It could be instant or take 1-2 working days.

The fees will also be determined by the country you’re sending money to, although WorldRemit won’t charge you any fees on your first transfer with them. Paying for your transfer by debit card is quick and easy. It’s also cheaper than using a credit card. Card payments are accepted if you’re in the UK and most types of debit, credit and prepaid cards issued by Visa or Mastercard are accepted.

However, they cannot accept Amex, Diner’s Card or Union Pay at present. If you choose to pay by credit card, some issuers may charge a fee as the transaction is classed as a cash transfer. Any fee will depend on your individual card terms and conditions and is not charged by WorldRemit.

How WorldRemit started

In the 1980s, while studying in London, Ismail Ahmed needed to send money home to his family in East Africa.

At the time, each transfer meant a long journey to an agent, who charged a small fortune in fees. In 2010, he decided to try and make a difference, with his vision being to help people like himself improve the lives of those they care about. That’s still at the heart of everything they stand for today. With the help of co-founders Catherine Wines and Richard Igoe, he founded WorldRemit to give an offline industry an online future.

They believe in helping their customers’ hard work go further. As a result, they’ve helped millions of children go to school, helped thousands of people receive medical treatment and, every week, help tens of thousands of people pay their bills. They’ve served 5.7 million customers, who have used 70 different currencies across 130 countries worldwide.
