Suttons Seeds Features

A Company Dating Back More Than 200 Years

The history of Suttons stretches back 200 years as it was founded in 1806 by John Sutton.

It was originally called the House of Sutton and supplied corn. John was joined by his two sons, Martin Hope and Alfred, and they persuaded their father to move into the flower and vegetable seed trade.

They became the first seed house to sell pure seed and their desire to provide only the best seed is very much at the heart of the business to this day. Martin Hope Sutton acquired nursery land and a greenhouse, and the company had begun selling greenhouse plants by 1839, with bulbs either coming from local nurseries or the Netherlands.

House of Sutton became Sutton & Son in 1836, while the company received Royal patronage in 1858, when Queen Victoria asked Martin Hope Sutton to supply seeds to the Royal household. In 1840, they established a laboratory which allowed themselves to test seed for germination and purity, and they still have one to this day.

The company continued to expand and, in 1962, they moved to new premises on the then main London to Bath road which, at the time, were the most modern of their kind in the country. Three years later, they became the first company to provide foil seed packets to customers in the UK, while Suttons moved to Torquay in Devon in 1976, before relocating to their current premises in Paignton.

Complete Your Garden With Trees And Shrubs

As well as flowers and vegetables, you will also be able to fill the grounds of your property with a host of trees and shrubs as Suttons sell varieties like clematis, acer, hydrangea and buddleia.

View architectural, evergreen and ground cover bushes, whether you are looking for large or small shrubs, while you can also take your pick from various climbing plants and ornamental trees.

If you need a little privacy in your garden, why not grow yourself a box, conifer, laurel or privet hedge? If you love growing your own, they also sell fruit trees and plants, including pear and apple trees, as well as raspberry and strawberry plants, while you can also pick up some grape vines, a cherry tree or a plum tree.

All The Tools You Need To Maintain Your Garden

As well as plants, Suttons sell a host of other gardening essentials.

If you love relaxing as you enjoy the outdoors, you can purchase garden furniture and solar lighting, while if you prefer getting your hands dirty, you will find hand and power garden tools, wheelbarrows and metal or wooden greenhouses.

Browse pots and planters to put your flowers and plants in or help attract some wildlife into your garden with some bird food. Shop for turf and lawn mowers to cut your grass and view landscaping products like aggregates, paving and fountains, while if you are worried about things eating your plants, Suttons stock garden pest control products, including bug and insect deterrents. If you are looking for gifts for a green-fingered friend or relative, meanwhile, you will find everything from books and calendars to jigsaws.
