Desigual Features

Desigual was launched in Ibiza in 1984 by 20-year-old Thomas Meyer, who was originally from Switzerland.

Having dreamed about a world in which people dressed differently in affordable clothes that would help generate positive feelings, his first item was a denim jacket patched together using bits of old worn jeans. It was a huge success and, in 1995, Desigual presented their first collection, featuring a host of prints and colours.

Their first brand store was opened in Ibiza in 1986, but they soon found themselves in financial trouble. However, they recovered to launch their Styled for relaxed and Feel you sexy collections, which featured prints designed by Meyer and proved to be big hits.

The mid-1990s saw the company start to export to France and Portugal, while they opened three stores in tourist resorts in Spain. In 1998, they launched their first website and opened a store at the Triangle shopping centre in Barcelona. Their first kids' collection was produced in 2004, while the following year saw them announce the opening of 24 stores.

This was followed, in 2006, by the opening of a branch store in Singapore — their first not on Spanish territory — while London and New York soon followed. By 2009, their clothes were being sold by 500 multi-brand stores across the USA, while the largest Desigual store in the world was opened in Madrid in 2010 — the same year they launched their online store. Their products are now distributed in 500 of their own franchise stores, 8,000 multi-brand spaces and 2.500 corner concessions.
