Company History

The Fortnum's story can be traced back to 1705.

The Fortnum family had arrived in London as high-class builders tasked with reinvigorating Mayfair in the wake of the Great Fire. Hugh Mason had a small store in St James's Market and a spare room, which was taken by William Fortnum, who was a footman in Queen Anne's household.

Ideally situated for travellers heading west, the business decided to create food which was easily portable for long distance journeys, and they created the world's first scotch egg. With the business of sending mail open to anyone, they also decided to become a post office in 1794, provided letterboxes which were collected six times a day. This arrangement lasted until 1839, when the General Post Office was founded.

Leading the trend in ready to eat luxury foods, they won first prize as importers of dried fruits and dessert goods at London's Great Exhibition of 1851, while 1886 saw them introduce Heinz baked beans to Britain. They supplied the 1922 Everest expedition with 60 tins of quail in foie gras and four dozen bottles of Champagne, while the 1930s saw them open sports and contemporary decorating departments.

In 1955, they launched The Fountain, one of the most exciting restaurants in London, while 1964 saw the now famous Fortnum's clock added to the frontage of their Piccadilly store. Jumping ahead a few decades, they launched their first online store in 1999, selling just hampers, which made them a truly global brand. In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge, opened their Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, while the decade also saw them open stores in Heathrow Terminal 5 and on the concourse at St Pancras International station.
