Emirates Features

Company History

Emirates have come a long way since they flew their first two routes out of Dubai with just two aircraft in 1985.

From those first steps onto the regional travel scene, they have become a worldwide leader in travel and tourism. Emirates now boast a fleet of more than 265 aircraft, which fly to over 155 destinations in more than 80 countries around the globe.

From those two routes and two aircraft, more than 1,500 Emirates flights now depart Dubai each week to destinations throughout six continents. In 1960, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum opened Dubai airport, while the 1970's saw English businessman Maurice Flanagan move to Dubai to become director and general manager of dnata, which had been set up by the government to provide ground handling services.

In 1984, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Maurice Flanagan discussed launching an airline, which they decide to call Emirates. On October 25th, 1985, flight EK600 leaves Dubai for Karachi and the rest is history.
