Clintons was founded by Don Lewin in 1968, with the first store opening in Epping, Essex.

By 1998, the family run business had grown to include 77 stores, and this had increased further to 277 by 1994. That same year, Clinton Cards — as it was known then — acquired 83 shops from Hallmark Cards.

They bought 112 shops from Carlton Cards in 1995, while a further 211 stores were acquired in 1998. They launched their e-commerce website in 2000, while June 2012 saw them bought out by American Greetings, who are based in the USA.

They initiated a full rebrand, with Clintons replacing Clinton Cards. This included them offering a new range of cards, gifts, gift wrap and stationery items, while they also revealed a new logo and refurbished all of their stores. There are currently around 400 stores across the United Kingdom.
