What Your Policy Includes

When it comes to protecting our pets, it is not simply about finding the cheapest option as different policies will provide various features. A policy will typically include cover for accidents and injuries, which will help towards vets bills, and treatment for unexpected illnesses, which may include cover for you having to cancel travel plans because your pet has become unwell.

Should you have to spend more than four consecutive days in hospital, it might cover boarding fees if you have to put your pet in a kennel or cattery, while if your cat or dog goes missing or is stolen, it will provide funds for you to advertise and offer a reward. It will also usually offer liability cover in case your pet causes accidental damage to a third party and they take action against you.

When choosing insurance for cats or dogs, you should always read the small print to see what it does not include. Most policies will exclude preventative treatments, including vaccinations, pre-existing conditions, dental treatment, routine check-ups and behavioural problems.

Policy Types

There are four main types of pet insurance cover for you to consider.

A lifetime policy should cover any new medical illness or injury with a set figure each year. As long as you renew every 12 months, it will provide cover for a long-term or recurring condition for the life of the policy. With a maximum benefit policy, a set amount of money is made available to cover each health issue your furry friend may suffer.

However, once the amount has been paid out, the treatment will not be covered again. Time limited cover is basically a 12-month policy. It is different from a maximum benefit policy as there is a fixed sum of money available for each separate injury or illness which will only cover treatment for a specific period of time - usually 12 months from the start of the condition you have put a claim in for.

If you wish, you can opt for an accident only policy, which will provide a fixed sum for each accidental injury to put towards the cost of veterinary fees. This will not cover illnesses, while some policies will have a treatment time limit.

Multi-Pet Insurance

If you have more than one pet in your household, you can get a discount of up to 10% when taking out multiple pet insurance policies.

It is the same as individual pet insurance in the fact that it will provide cover for such things as vet bills and boarding costs, but you will be able to tie the policies into one. By keeping them tied together, a multi-pet policy will reduce the paperwork and probably the cost too. Lower Your Premium

There are many factors which will influence the cost of pet insurance which you will not be able to control, such as the vet fees in your area.

However, if you are thinking of getting a puppy or kitten for the kids or are looking at rescue animals, there are some things to consider. The type of pet, its breed and age will all have an impact on the price as premiums are based on risk.

If your chosen breed of dog is susceptible to a particular medical condition which is expensive to treat, this will push the price of your premiums up. If you are thinking of having a pet, you might want to find out which breeds are prone to certain conditions - especially ones which are expensive to insure.

Steps you can take to help reduce the cost of insurance include getting your pet microchipped and ensuring they are up-to-date with their vaccinations, while increasing the excess you are willing to pay could cut the premiums.
