Below are the Consumer Reviews Listed in Date Order
| | Bestseller for a reason! | Written on 17 October 2008 | I've had this handset for around 6 months and I reckon I still haven't discovered all it has to offer! Upsides - superb all-round entertainment handset, camera clarity, video calling, memory, websurfing, display of webpages and Nokia/Google Maps (clear satellite images), movies are displayed really well, the N-Gage gaming platform is great.
Downsides - abysmal battery life, weightiness (brick in pocket springs to mind!), camera takes an age to warm up and get focussed, inner keypad is on the small side, no card slot. It isn't really a good business phone (organiser is a bit basic, difficult to master typing emails and stuff on that miniscule keypad). Other than that (hope I haven't put you off!) it's a beautiful handset! | | | AND it's a 'phone too! | Written on 19 July 2008 | | What can i say that's not already been said? Brilliant piece of engineering...Spiderman 3 & headphones for long train journeys...top class music player & 5mp camera! Fancy spinning menus. So much crammed in that i still (after 3 months)have problems finding stuff like video clips downloaded to it! Haven't even used the GPS (was told it was expensive as it keeps an 'active link' as you drive/walk around). mine's on voda so you have to be careful accidentally pressing the bottom right 'voda live' button as it costs me 40p for 1 second's error. Great phone! Go 4 it!!! | | | Brilliant except why USB 1.1? | Written on 04 July 2008 | | This is my third Nokia S60 based smart phone (6630, N73). Because this phone has so much built in it is actually less good as a phone than the other two I have used. The battery life is lower and you have to slide to get to the keys. However it has so many extra useful functions I can forgive it this fault. What stops me giving it 5 stars is how slow it is when you come to put data onto the phone (ie movie MP4 files). I have an Ipod Nano on which I watched ripped DVDs in MP4 format when I am traveling etc. When I got the N95 I thought the screen is much bigger, I will use this instead. A 0.5GB movie which transfers from my PC to Ipod in less than 2 minutes takes around 30 minutes to copy to the N95 by USB cable!!!! This really is a put off. Why have Nokia chosen a connection which allows transfer speeds of a few KB/s when todays technology easily allows MB/s? Another slight problem is that when watching MP4 videos sometimes dark areas show as green rather than black. Stopping the movie and restarting usually clears this, or sometimes it gradually clears as you watch, but again a nuisance. | | | A truly wonderful phone. | Written on 22 June 2008 | As the title says, the N95-8GB is a truly wonderful device. As a phone, it performs beautifully and is loud and clear enough for use in noisy environments. The phone book is very easy to use and, despite huge amounts of negative debate on numerous forums, it proved very easy to pair with my Garmin nuvi 760T by using Nokia's 810 Contact Downloader software.
I've only had the phone for a couple of weeks, but it's advanced features just keep on impressing. WiFi is really useful. The 5MP camera is much better than it has any right to be and is probably comprable to the dedicated 5MP cameras of about 18 months ago. The video camera is very usable, definately not HD but certainly good enough to use in an emergency when you don't have your camcorder to hand. The video and audio playback capabilities are excellent for watching your videos or listening to your MP3 collection in quiet moments.
The only down side to this phone is battery life, and everything you may have read is true. That said, considering what it does, charging it every couple of days is a small price to pay.
All in all, I can't recommend this phone enough, and if you have any doubts (as I did if I'm honest - £450 is a lot of money for a phone) don't, it's worth every penny. | | | *** AMAZING PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY *** | Written on 21 June 2008 | I wont rant on chapter and verse, I'll keep it short and point out what I use it for etc. At first I was dubious about getting this phone, it always looked big and clunky in the pictures, however my boss got one and checked it out and it looked very appealing as a multi purpose unit. I got mines free on a long term contract with O2 with a free bolt on, I chose free web access so i could check my email and surf the net whenever and use GPS Maps. I use the camera to take pix of my aution listing items and its the best i've used yet for results especially on close ups. Its got so many features to list, i wont go through them all but the main point for me was that as well as using it as a Cell Phone, i can also use it as a WiFi Phone, meaning that I can connect it to my PC via WiFi and use Skype or Yahoo or MSN Internet phone which is free as it uses your internet connetion, or if you have free web bolt on, use it anywhere when your out for FREE! As long as the person you are chatting to is using the same chat software (Skype, MSN, Yahoo etc) then the WiFi is brilliant, excellent sound quality as well.
Moving along to the Multimedia side of things, it has 8GB built in memory, yes its fixed and theres no SD slot but who cares, 8GB is more than enough to pack in plenty of Movies, a bucket of CD album MP3s, Photos and more; and with the standard 3.5mm Jack then your run of the mill MP3 player headphones work with it as well. Movie quality is outstanding and i'd go as far to say that its near DVD quality. It uses realplayer to if you've played a movie on your PC with RealPlayer then you'll know the quality you get. Its got a radio as well if you fancy a listen to that.
Theres so much to say about this phone and I'm missing out the technical wizardry that it works from in the background to facilitate its functionality but it truly is a remarkable unit and from Nokia then you know the build quality is assured.
Gripes? The only one I have is battery life, but its not really a gripe as I am realistic about the use of the phone against the power consumption and i think the battery does pretty damn well for the number of functions that it powers. I see that this has been a gripe for many other people but I put that down to higher demanding customer expectations on phones nowadays, lets be honest, if you had a separate camera, a separate MP3 Player, a separate phone, a separate movie player etc how much energy would you use for all of those? all those chargers, all those batteries...and lets not forget the cost. With the Nokia N95-8GB you get all those items wrapped into one small unit with one charger. Yes you may need to charge the batter more often, but not as often as you think. If all you do is talk on the phone, take pictures, listen to MP3s and watch Movies etc then focus on recharging your phone, your missing out on a whole world out there...simply put, your not going to be using all the functions all the time 24/7 so you wont have to charge it all the time, but at least all the functions are there for you to use whenever you want them.
I know i said I wouldnt rant on but I could write chapter and verse about this phone. Well done Nokia, Jobs a good'un on this one. I would strongly recommend this phone to anyone if they'd get the use and convenience out of it that I get.
FYI the Nokia N96 is out soon which has a 16GB on board memory and an SD slot...thats a sign that Nokia DO listen to consumer feedback and reviews...you can bet your bottom dollar though that it will cost a fortune for at least another year and a half before you get it free on any contract...so me? I'm sticking quite happily with my N95-8GB, its got all the features and functionality that I need and want. As far as I'm concerned, and I've checked out other phone units out there including PDAs...this one beats them all. | | |
