Halfords Features

Company History

Halfords Cycle Company Limited was formed by F.W. Rushbrooke in Birmingham as a local hardware store in 1892 and by 1910, a further 110 retail stores had opened throughout England.

The company shortened its name to Halfords Limited in 1965 and it was bought by Burmah Oil four years later, resulting in its portfolio increasing to 317 stores. Trials of specialist motor stores also began in the same year.

A motor accessories outlet was opened in Bradford in 1973, while 1989 saw Halfords Limited sold to the Ward White Group, which was then acquired by The Boots Company. Halfords continued to go from strength to strength and between 1990 and 2000, new arcade store formats were successfully trialed, leading to the production of sub-shops for Bike Hut, audio, parts, touring and Ripspeed.

During this period, they also introduced many new ranges, including in-car technology and camping & leisure, while their first e-commerce store went live. Halfords was acquired by CVC Capital Partners in 2002 and, two years later, was floated on the London Stock Exchange.

weFit

Not only can you purchase motoring essentials from Halfords.com, but they can also help you out by fitting batteries, wiper blades and bulbs.

What’s more, there is no need to book — just pop in and they’ll get you back on the road in no time. Just buy from Halfords and their trained professionals will fit them while you wait. Ask in store and they’ll also be able to take a look at your screen wash and oil levels as part of their Halfords car check — great if you're gearing up for your MOT.

This free road ready car check at Halfords will ensure your car is running as efficiently as possible. Halfords will also repair your chipped windscreen which, on average, takes 20 minutes to complete. There are rules surrounding the location and size of the damage they can repair, and if you are unsure, just go along to one of their stores and they’ll take a look for you.

Bike Services

When you order a bike on the Halfords website, their mechanics can build it for you for free.

Just Click & Collect your bike at Halfords and their Bike Hut team will not only build it but will also carry out a 22-point safety check. If you buy a bike built in store, you’ll receive a free bronze service which will see, after six weeks, their mechanics put it through a thorough seven-point bike health check, as well as brake and gear adjustment, to ensure it’s still in great condition.

If you only need your suspension and brakes looking at, they can carry out parts servicing, while they also offer silver and gold services. Take out a bike care plan, meanwhile, and, after making a one-off payment, you’ll benefit from free parts and accessories fitting, as well as an annual silver service, for the duration of your plan.

Plans are available for one or three years and cover both adult and kids’ bikes, families, BMX bikes and bikes purchased from other retailers. If you want to benefit from great bike maintenance, Halfords is the place for you.

Bike Finance

As well as being able to save with our cashback offers and Halfords voucher code deals, buy a bike worth over a certain amount and you’ll be able to spread the cost of it with interest free credit.

When shopping online, all you need to do is choose your bike and check your eligibility. Then, add your chosen bike to your basket and when you reach the checkout, you’ll be asked if you would like to apply for finance. Once your application for finance has been approved, Halfords will begin building your bike. You’ll be able to spread the cost of your bike over 12 months, and because there’s no interest, you won’t be paying anything extra.

Re-cycle

Halfords run the Re-cycle scheme, which takes unwanted and unused bikes from the UK and gives them to people in Africa.

There are probably millions of bikes collecting dust in sheds and garages in this country, which could become the only means of transport for people in a less fortunate situation to get to work or school. Bikes can be too expensive for most people in the poorest parts of Africa, while the skills needed to maintain them might not exist.

The Re-cycle scheme not only sends unwanted bikes over, but also teaches local people how to look after and repair them. Throughout the year, Halfords hold national trade-in events, which give you the chance to donate unwanted bikes at any of their stores.
