Moneyback at cashback sites TV advert

Have you spotted the TopCashBack TV ad?

Competition has now expired but please find video link below

advertIt starts with the line "Did you know you can get money back when shopping at major online stores?"

Last week TopCashBack launched the first major UK cashback website TV advertisement, broadening our reach to educate consumers on how they could save £1,000s each year just by changing the way they shop and sign-up for products.

The message we want to get across is simple: do all your shopping online using TopCashBack's retailer directory, instead of buying in-store.

Then the advertising commission TopCashBack earns from the sale (that most websites usually keep) will be given back to you. 100% of it. And we're still the only cashback site to do so and be fee-free too!

youtube Watch on YouTube

What's more, the best part is, you get cashback for purchases you would have made anyway, so you're effectively earning a cash bonus purely for changing the method you use to shop.

And with nearly 3,000 retailers and product providers listed, you'll be hard pressed to find something to buy that you can't get cashback on.

The ad was filmed last month on location in Stockport by an eight-man film-crew over two days. It will be appearing regularly on a wide range of Freeview, Sky and cable channels over the coming weeks.

The first airing was last Tuesday morning (1st June) on the Style channel, and then it appeared on the Diva channel for the Oprah Winfrey Show soon after. Other channels it'll feature on include Comedy Central, ITV2, Sky1 and 5USA, to name but a few.

Tell us what you like about the ad to be in with a chance of winning £250 in Thomas Cook vouchers

We hope we've been successful in getting our message across, but what do you think? Have you caught a glimpse of the ad yet? If yes, we'd love to hear your feedback.

If not, keep your eyes peeled; especially if you plan on watching Scrubs on Comedy Central this afternoon; Judge Judy on ITV2 tomorrow morning; Top Gear on Dave, or Coronation Street on ITV2 at lunchtime on Friday, or Frasier or Two And A Half Men on Comedy Central on Sunday.

Or take a peek now on YouTube and take part in our competition to win £250 in Thomas Cook vouchers.

All you have to do to enter is watch the 30-second clip and leave a comment below this blog telling us what you like about it. And if you do enjoy it, we'd love it if you'd click the YouTube 'like' button too.

The competition will end on Thursday 30th June and one winner will be selected at random using random.org and informed via the TopCashBack enquiries system - so please do come back and check your account after the competition closes.

The winner's username will be posted on the blog and forum once they have confirmed their contact details.

Good luck!

Winner - Amanda Jones, Derbyshire

The ad is clear and on the money. I have been a keen promoter of this website for yonks now. I found it difficult to communicate because people were suspicious of getting money for nothing more than a click but this explains it fully and clearly .......... Thank goodness all i have to do now is send the link to the ad.

I think the advert is ok, and the fact that they're advertising a brilliant service is fantastic - it gets it across to a much wider audience. Obviously i understand why the big names can't be mentioned, but people will come to the website, have a look and see just how many brands there are. Well done tcb.

I spent 15 mins today trying to explain top-cashback to someone (who asked if i was trying to sell him a pyramid scheme!!), I could have just sent him to the advert.

The only improvement i can think of would be to tell them to sign up via my referral link. ;-)

It is a good advert, but i think you missed a trick by not explaining that you just click through topcashback and shop on the retailers site as normal. When i refer people that is usually the bit that needs explaining and once they get it they come right on board.

Would have been good if you could have mentioned some of the big retailers names on here, but i understand that this may have been really difficult and the big brand probably don't want that advertising too much.

Finally a tv advert for the site. After forwarding the "introduce a friend" link, i have had many friends who have said that emails/facebook must have been hacked. Everytime i tell them that it is actually me sending the messages and that even though the fact that you get money back for items you are going to purchase anyway may be too good to be true, but it actually is true. Finally good to see the advert on tv, just hope to see it more and more.

Brilliant tv advertisement, its great to see topcashback on tv, finally i won't have to keep explaining to my friends about what topcashback is and how it works etc not that i mind because everyone should know about you, this should give the site a great boost because if people didn't know about you already they sure do now, from now on the only way is up, well done topcashback!

The add's ok, but the part with the kids watching the movie is a bit exaggerated (especially the boys reactions!) But to be fair it explains what you do, briefly how it works and will get people looking at the website. I’ve finally got my parents using it, even though they signed up ages ago, dad promised me he would use it to buy his new oven this weekend!!

This was a good ad, but the bit about the mum getting £80 cashback for a phone seems unbelievable - especially to a sceptic or someone who needs swaying to consider joining a cashback site. It's probably too late, but if you're going to make another advert, make the cashback figures low - so that it reflects real life and is, thus, realistic. Mobile phones are once in a long while purchases. You should advertise for things people buy repeatedly like things from tesco direct, books, etc. Show how little bits here and there add up - then it's believable.

I think the hardest part of advertising a cashback site is trying to prove it is not some sort of con, a scam, or something which involves a load of effort. Certainly i have found this when telling my friends about the site. People will just say it sounds too good to be true. You've gotta get across how easy it is, i always think sometimes the cashback amounts might be loads of smaller transactions but it all adds and as your advert writing puts "your gonna buy it anyway" so why not get the cashback, a philiosphy which shouldnt fall on death ears thanks to this advert. I really hope the advert helps the site out even more - best cashback site - free or otherwise on the web!

When i see the current 'other cashback site' ads on tv, or even the large quantities of flash ads they're currently running through google, it actually makes me quite cross that they're spending "my" fiver, which they told me they needed to run the service, on an unnecessary luxury (considering they already have enough members to run a profitable business). Because topcashback is free, your paid advertising annoys me less, but still leaves me wondering where the money came from and whether it could have been spent better. I'm not entirely sure the tagline will please your retail partners much, since they're presumably aiming to change customer behavior via cashbacks, rather than just give their profits away!

I liked the ad, it was punchy and to the point, demonstrated how all family members can benefit using topcashback site. More exposure on tv should lead to loads more people using site, and more merchants getting interested in promoting their profile on site, so more cash back for all!! Hopefully its a win-win situation!! I have been using site for some time and overall have been pleased. Suggested friends and relatives use it, but most seem suspicious and think there must be a catch somewhere. This ad should lend lots of credibility to your organisation. Just hope we won't have to wait more time to get our cashback.

Gives topcashback some extra credibility. When trying to get people to join who don't know about cashback, i think lots of people think it's some kind of scam and couldn't possibly just get cash back for free just by clicking! This add, with it's straightforward, gimmick-free style will let more people be aware that it is a legitimate and worthwhile site!

A long time coming but welcome now it's here to spread the word. I try to promote topcashback as much as i can, because i've found it a really positive site so pleased to see an advert. Certainly don't hate the advert...At least it's not annoying, but do think similiar to some other comments that it isn't all that memorable, and in some ways it def does remind of those adverts for consolidated loans etc:
The family are great, nothing too cheesy & chose of products to promote/examples all work well, and think is best to avoid "funny" in order to not lose the credibility, but it just misses "something" somehow. Great to see on tv though !!

I thought the ad got all the main points across and will bring in lots of new members, however it needs to be more catchy like wonga or webuyanycar to attract the masses to this site. The advert looks professional and protrays the company as trushworthy but its format is too similar to the current ones for internet finance companys and weekly payment stores that are out at the moment. This could be very misleading if people are not watching carefully!

I like that it shows examples of different things you can get cashback for. I dislike the fact that the narrator is trying to explain the concept several times and in a hurry, for me that overcomplicated it. It needs to be put in a more catchy way; the buy online tag line at the end should be used instead of the complex narration.

I didn't like that much the advertisement, it doesn't look that realistic though it is. I got a cashback from this site buying an i-phone 4 and this site is free to use. I am very happy to get the topcashback site to give me discount in the other way.

This advertisement can be more better by changing the models, and the use of only one laptop. You can include, buying things like tv, games, mobile etc at first and then use it. This advertisement shows as if they already have this things and only watching this site instead of using the site properly.

Good luck and best wishes.
Amit

The tv advert was lively with believable actors (they even looked like a real family). The idea that anyone can get 'cash' given back for anything they purchase is a good one and i would suspect, the examples given in the ad eg mobiles, dvds etc relate to potential target audiences.. And, they're up-to-date.. However, it did make me feel that there must be a catch. Having never seen the ad before, or heard of your site, i did have to do a double search before i understood exactly how to get money back.
The voice of the man talking reminded me of the lottery guy and it wasnt hard to listen to, again appealing i suspect to a wide female audience. The ad was colourful and engaging: not too long and didnt drone on..It was just the right timeslot to make an audience think..How? Do i get money back.
I think you need more advertising like this..And maybe simple step-by-step guide to how to do it.
Overall, a catchy ad although the last line didnt do it for me' you'd have bought it anyway'...This does assume all people buy those items: i for one do not..So maybe either widen the choice of examples or ditch that line..
Very professional..Just need more visual content of how to save not just 'you can save'

I haven't watched the advert yet because i don't have speakers on this pc.
As for comments about martin lewis fronting it, yes he is very good in front of a camera, and i believe this is a product he believes in, but whether he would give it a televised endorsement? - What if tcb ran into trouble some way down the line with paying cashback on time (doubtful but he'd have to consider it, since he'd be entangling his brand image with tcb's in a much more public way).
Nonetheless as someone who has used mse since it's very beginnings, what feels like 10 years ago, i'd back the idea.
Bit of a tangent but since it was being discussed.. I'll post something more useful once i've watched the advert!

Bang on target brand communication: low budget without appearing to be amateurish; brand colour palette makes it bright and therefore memorable; messages such as "you'd have bought it anyway" and "easy" all very appealing. I think the ads message is simple which is good and the ad tells everyone everything they need to know the only draw back is this site sounds to good to be true in the sd the only way to counter this is to get respected companies and or persons to come foward and endorse the site in a very public way

Positive things: i like the 'you would've bought it anyway' message
Negative things: the voiceover woman has a really irritating voice!!
Suggestion: i think a shot showing the web page and how you just click through would help people understand how it works/how easy it is.
Could also have a permanent footer throughout the advert showing the web address, so people have more time to remember it or write it down.

Concise, informative, gets the message across particularly the final comment of 'you would have bought it anyway' a good balance between detail but not overload and just enough to get the mouse finger clicking away. Like the detail emphasising free and also in footer saying how cashback is paid, could maybe have made it more 'real' with some examples of cashback champions or average cashback per user. Good first effort though tcb, you deserve your plaudits.

I liked the advert, got the name out there. What i think you need to do for the less technology-inclined is to do a very quick step by step on the advert on how to use topcashback.

Pretty much:
1. Found something you like?
2. Go to topcashback.Com and search for "website.Com"
3. Use the link to go through to "website.Com"
4. Buy the product as you would
5. Profit!

Great advert guys, best of luck!

Alot of people dont know what cashback sites are and if they do they are using them or dont quite understand them and are a little reserved as they seem to good to be true. My experience of tcb is simple, its the best site out there, the customer is 2nd to none (this includes all other business websites i have used!!!) And it comes across online as a class act, the advert doesnt seem to sell any of these strengths. I think it should educate, show a few brand names (to make trustworthy) and explain that the user deals with a friendly helpful work force!
Being involved with this kind of work i understand how creative ideas get saturated due to restrictions, wanting to say everything and plan old 'trying to please everyone' scenarios but i do think the principles have been lost to grab 'newbies'
I like the idea that im in a sort of exclusive club with tcb, thats the winning formulae i feel. Love tcb just cant see the relationship with the ad

The cashback advert is absoutley? Wonderful idea (first time) but need more catchy, trendy, colourful and spot on! ( I find this advert is bit dull and bit of cuckoo cloud nine!!) The advert need to use their companies to advert as their brand names, like marks and spencer, debenham, thomson,? Jjb, m & m direct, etc... I would prefer if you put percentage rather than cash back price logo! It may confuse people. A lot of people have no awareness of what is top cashback ? Maybe more simple claify!

It is a simple ad, easy to understand what topcashback does but i would say that it is a tad old fashion and appears cheaply made. On the other hand, topcashback does not sell products and lives on ads and sponsors from retailers so one should not expect big advertising budgets to be used here. It should anyway do the job and attract more people to the site and hopefully give us users even better deals in the future.

Showed the best case scenario rather than the more likely odd 20p saving from a dvd etc. So people may be disappointed when actually getting here. "You would have bought it anyway" is a good enough slogan though the voice over seemed condescending as if it was aimed at kids. Not enough information on how the cashback process works to newbies but wouldn't need to be too detailed. Definitely needs work for future ads but it's good you're getting out there.

I thought that the script for the voice over was good; very clear and well ennunciated and got all the basicc information across to encourage viewers to visit the site. The woman's voice probably seemed annoying to some partly because it's insistence etc contrasted with the rather cheap looking pictures. It wasn't as bad as some of the home made car showroom ads, but it was basically a radio ad with charicature-ish illustrations.
The advantage is that the main message will get across even if you go to make tea in the ad break because it is all in the words and little is added to it by the film.

I think teaming up with a big store or having a store sponsor these kind of adverts would be a lucrative way to go and generate a new income stream for tcb.

The only store that stood out was dell from the screen shots. If it gave the actual store names where mum and dad and kids got there stuff that would give confidence.

Showing the awards that you have on your home page from newspapers etc would also add credibility to the brand.

A mention of the number of people who already use it would be good.

A calm, guiding voice might be good for a future ad using a confidence giving accent.

Otherwise it's an advert and hopefully will get people to have a look at the site and see how they can save on everything they buy already.

Steve :)

The ad is a very good first attempt, there is a very good reason why this site is number one - unlike everyone else out there you have made your name in transparency and honesty and for that you deserve all the accolade you are getting.

Really cheesy ad! Didn't really make it clear exactly how topcashback works, i.E. You click on the link on topcashback.Co.Uk to the website you want to puchase from and make your order, which is tracked back to and credited to your account. The lack of information makes is seem a little 'dodgy' sounding for people who aren't already aware of this system or the company.

Was ok needed to be a little more informative for it to have a greater impact and attract the people who know little or nothing about using such a site and the variety of items which could be purchased using the top cashback website, but i guess you have to start somewhere and i think it will generate a lot more interest as the economic climate gets even tougher than it is at the moment.

Some posters have hit the nail on the head and to sum it up.. The advert does not appeal to new clients/customers.

It attracts me as i am aware of the service and know what its about. However it doesn't stress how it is a hassle free, free cashback, free to use, free money etc..

People don't understand how cashback works and believe it is a 'con' an advert would and should demonstrate how tcb works and how easy it is. E.G. Show someone typing in rac or orange and clicking get cash back.. Show them buying the product then show the cashback going into their account.

Could be useful to contact martin lewes, or put on the advert as seen in the times and other media/ tv shows that have featured the company.

Good to see an advert though as it is making people aware, however unsure to the effect it has had in informing people.

Hope that helps.

It's okay, but it's not very informative. For members of the site viewing the ad, it's obvious what the site is, and how it works. But for the uninitiated, who don't even know what a cashback site is and how it works, it's a bit useless. I think a more informative advert, that demonstrates how to use tcb, and just how easy it is to use, would be much more helpful in attracting new users to the site.

Its a good attempt, however there are a few problems. It is not catchy in any way except for the very last bit (you would have bought it anyway) and even that is not conveyed with enough enthusiasm. The ad lacks anything to suggest that tcb is different from 100s of other companies out there that offer similar services but are nowhere as good. You need to get across that its a free service (with more impact) and also the fact that a large number of people have saved a significant amount of money using tcb. The values quoted in the ad, except for the mobile, are not enticing enough. The other thing to mention is that people associate cash back with lots of extra hassle (i struggle with convincing my friends regarding this) and its important to get the message across that this is hassle free! The voice over is also a little artificial/fake for my liking. Would it be possible to mention store names (popular ones) so that viewers can connect with the concept of cashback from stores that they like and use regularly? Also use actual cash images rather than the tcb £ sign so that it gets your attention.

Putting the points i mentioned above, if i were a newbie to cash back schemes, then i would not be really interested in the advert and would probably not think twice about it. In fact i did catch it on live tv and only looked up at the end when i heard the final puch line!

On a final note, the above points are meant to be constructive and not take away from a very good first attempt at an advert.

Not a bad advert by any means, but as a few other posters have said, daytime tv ads have a bit of a reputation for not always being as straightforward as they should be, and people who know nothing about cashback may just see this and think it's a bit of a scam. After all, cashback does sound too good to be true - viewers need to understand that the only shocking thing about topcashback is that it is good, and it is true! Maybe get a minor but trusted celeb on there (i'd suggest someone like barry norman, who is known to daytime tv viewers from guesting on countdown, or another daytime personality) and get some media reviews on the screen, so that people will know it's safe and legit. And a quick on-screen demo wouldn't go amiss. But hats off to you for taking this step and giving what is a great service a well deserved bit of publicity.

By the simple addition of a screen full of popular shop logos, you could emphasise that the cashback is obtainable by shopping at mainstream popular websites. We users know there's no catch - how about including some real-life shoppers recounting real-life savings made through the site? To a newcomer, topcashback sounds too good to be true. No need to pay any actors, just keep it simple, repetitive and slower to get the point home.

Glad you've made your way to tv and you've done it amazingly!! Adverts like these can come accross cheesy, but you have it just right. I hope it generates many more customers x

memberIcon Good start... by Natstally

It's cheery and pleasant without being too annoying, although the first bit reminds me of a bright house or furniture shop ad!

I think it would be good to mention that most general cashback is done by a percentage rather than straight cash amount. I presume you couldn't name stores specifically but say "mum got 10% cashback on her new dress"

A quick mention of how you claim the cashback would be good too, "have your cashback paid directly into your bank, or by paypal [etc] if you prefer"

As others have said, a more detailed view of how you actually click through to a site, use a generic shop name as an example or something?

Great to see it advertised on tv though!

I liked the fact the message was brought across, so it made people aware about cashback. I can't believe in this day and age that there are some people that don't know.

Great ad, will drive even more people to this site. Which can only be a good thing because the more that come the better cashback rates you can negotiate for everyone. Win win all round :-d

It's good! But maybe it would have more impact if you said something along the line of: "if you bought your car insurance, phone, utilities home insurance and ... Etc... You could save on average (or up to) £xxx per annum with no cost or risk to you!" Or something akin!

The advert made me smile because i knew that due to topcashback.Co.Uk the tv, sky subscription and speakers that the advert was playing through all ended up costing me a lot less.

Its a good, colourful, and nice to look at advert but it fails to show the simplicity about it. It also has the feel of the "its too good to be true" and feels a little bit like those adverts that will lend you money with a 3000x pay back. Good start but need a bit of realism in there, like someone using the site. Hit the populations...E.G. Students getting money back from books, husbands getting money back so can buy wife flowers and take her out for a meal...Only a few ideas.

It always amazes me how many people don't know about cashback websites so it should educate a few! Can't say everything in 30 seconds but i think it gets the main points across and anyone interested knows your name after watching this so could always google for more information.

The advert is fine, but i don't think it really gets the web address across, if i saw it fir the first time i may just search "top cash back sites yocashback , quidco and others are also listed and people may register elsewhere.
The message was get cash back more than register at topcashback.
Sorry but i need to be honest

The ad may make viewers aware of topcahback services but i think you need to show how the site works and how easy it is to use as i can guess that a large percentage of viewers who go online may not understand that. I know of a few myself and trying to convince them is like hitting my head off a wall - also it is easy to forget to go through your site to purchase something; i myself am guilty of this at least once, though i cannot think of a solution to that problem.

It's good to have an ad about cashbacking, but i would like to see it stressed that you can get cash back and it wont cost you anything more than you would have paid anyway - and you may even have got it cheaper still if you had used one of the search engines to find the product you wanted. Keep up the good work, you really are the top cashback site!

Straight to the point. The add does look like one of those "day time" adds & not as polished as the prime time adds.

A concise advert that tell you exactly what you need to know. It is short, which people like, to the point - who has time to guess what's going on? - And doesn't irritate, as so many others do!
Bright, cheery and honest.

A good advert. Well done

I quite liked the ad.

Hard to judge whether it concisely communicates the cash back message to those who don't do it already - tcb is such second nature to me now that it is hard to imagine not understanding the concept!

I have to say i found the 'besides you'd have bought it anyway' tag line difficult to digest and not really adding to the whole thing.

Any postings on when the ad runs so we can watch it 'in real life' rather than just on you tube?
