Top CashBack's CASHBACK Blog

Hello Everyone

  12 February 2008

Hey Everyone

We are so very excited to say HELLO from our new online diary – or blog.

You know, although we have kept in close contact with many of you via our enquiry system, it has slowly dawned on us that we have no real contact with the vast majority of you guys. (You might say that we have been pretty slow on the uptake of this little, but important fact – and you would probably be right).

We really want to get to know you guys – and likewise, let you get to know us a little, otherwise we might just seem like a faceless organization – which is just what we don’t want!

So, what better than a blog we thought (which is really just an online diary – or space where we can communicate with you guys, and you can send us your comments back). We intend to use this area therefore to keep you updated with our cashback offerings, news of the site, seasonal offerings and other similar, topical news as well as, perhaps, the odd little ‘musing’ about the direction of the site – basically, we’re going to be posting about all things ‘cashback’. We’ll also be paying attention to your comments – and we’ll do our level best to note and act on any suggestions made.

We’re not intending to overload you with blog entries several times a week – in fact, we may only post here occasionally when we consider we have something really newsworthy, or which would really benefit you guys….so do keep an eye out for updates.

We really want to connect with you guys – because without you this site would be nothing. So go on, make a contribution – just say 'Hello' or if you're up to it, comment and have a bearing on the future of YOUR site.

Olly (12 Feb 08)

Design improvement
Firstly, I would like to say that I am really impressed with this site. Having used it for about 18 months now, I have only experienced one problem with a payment tracking but it was soon sorted out. I have saved about £650 in that time. I showed a friend today and she nearly fell off her chair!

I have to say that I think the design of your front page looks much sharper and easier to read. There was so much going on before.
Well done and keep coming up with the good offers!

Whats happened to Holiday watchdog click
Just started using this site at beginning of feb, its great. I used to use edeals but this pays double the amount of cashback that they did. Disapointed the holiday watchdog offer for writing holiday views has been taken off. that was a nice little money earner getting paid £2 a time for reviewing hotels youd stayed at. seemed too good to be true, but was good while it lasted. Hope topcashback canpursuade them back, even if they offer reduced cashback on their site

reply to Sue946

From what I understand happens, TCB works with a number of networks who host the retailers. So when you make a purchase this gets tracked through a complex process. Sometimes the transaction gets lost, for whatever reason. So, when you put in an enquiry TCB investigate on your behalf to find the transaction with the networks to try and resolve your issue and get you your money.
In the time I have been doing this I have only had one missing transaction, which was soon sorted out. I think you have just had some bad luck, but from my experience don't be put off.

Hello to everyone!

A BLOG was something I always felt was missing from TCB; I find your site quite interesting and very often use it to access and make purchases. The cashback is quite good too!

Would like to take the opportunity to query why my commissions on Ebay that were meant to track at 50% (until it was changed on the 5th Feb 08 to 40%) were not tracking at the stated rate from the 1st to the 4th of Feb 08? I ask this because could not log an enquiry on TCB site.

Would welcome TCB's reply to my question.

Thanking u all...!

Hi

Wow - thanks so much for everyone's replies. Great to hear from you all.

There's a bit of a theme about a forum developing. We've no plan to start a forum at the moment. We currently have a thread running within the referrer's board over on the MoneySavingExpert forum. We try to check in on this thread every day, so feel free to ask general questions over there.

Holiday Watchdog have apparently been bought out - so I believe the new owners are reviewing all marketing activity etc.. Perhaps it will be back one day?

I do admit that we were slightly caught out by eBay changing their rate and it was a few days before we noticed (this was entirely our fault - no fault on eBay). We changed the rate we displayed when we realised. I apologise for this.

By the way, it is always possible to send in a General Enquiry about any specific issues (rather than general issues).

Cheers

Missing Claims
Hi TCB thanks for the cash you have saved me so far. I have currently submitted 5 missing claims since Christmas, so a little disappointed at the moment.

Please could you let us know who many staff you have dealing with missing claims as this process appears rather slow to get things resolved. Perhaps more understanding of your setup would help with the frustrations!
Many thanks

TopCashBack on 14-Feb-08 09:31 tells us that...

Hi

Thanks for that ChrisHogsden.

sam303 - we put whatever resource we feel is needed onto chasing missing cashback claims. I think I'm right in saying that all of your claims are already in process and have been sent to the retailers. We now need to wait to hear back from them - so it isn't really a question of our resources - but rather waiting to hear back.

The vast majority of our retailers are now on new systems meaning that they don't get an indefinite time to respond to our missing cashback claims. They are now required to look at the claims and either accept them or reject them within a specific length of time. If they fail to respond, then the claim will become auto-approved.

I hope that sounds good to people.

Cheers

Payment time!
Hi

I have submitted a enquiry about this - however, has anyone noticed that it now takes A MONTH from when you ask to be paid until when you actually receive the payment?

TCB - why has this moved from a week or so to a WHOLE MONTH?

Thanks
TopCashBack on 14-Feb-08 11:02 voices that...

Hi jilby

We've actually just answered your query directly - but I'll repeat here for the benefit of others.

From reading your enquiry I can see that you are actually worried by our stated Estimated Time for payment.

We greatly over-estimate the time it will take us to pay our members - but in reality we generally easily beat our estimate and usually send through payment within a few days (or up to about a week). This is why in the past, you have noticed payment going through so quickly!

We should probably review our wording and our estimated time for payment - but in short, don't worry about it - payment should be forthcoming much more quickly.

Cheers

TCB (Olly) That is a very interesting statement about the enquiry procedure - I very much like the sound of that.

I've been a member here for a while now and haven't earned all that much. I'm a member of several cashback sites and do the lion's share at the biggest of them all.

I'm getting more and more frustrated with them and am considering defecting :). It sounds very much from all I've read that you really value your customers... perhaps you should promote somewhere what makes TCB different from other sites. I know you have a comparison table but I'm not talking about figures I'm talking about an area such as customer servise where you could really differentiate yourself.

Phew...
Just a few questions to answer then :-)

Louise - we would love some more and we know that many members keep asking us. The trouble is, they prove pretty difficult to integrate from good and trustworthy sites. I know this is slightly fobbing you off - we do investigate new sources of dailies from time to time, but nothing normally quite ticks all the boxes.

thepearce - thanks for your comments. I'm not saying we're perfect at sorting out claims, but we do seem to have quite a good record compared to some sites! Customer service is a very difficult area to quantify however. We have spent two or three years trying to let our actions speak louder than our words - but perhaps we do need to shout about it a bit more???

From reading your comment, I do wonder why people choose to support a site which charges them over a site which doesn't. To my simple mind, logic would say that the more generous site should get the support whenever possible? Perhaps I'm getting a bit heavy now though :-o

spoon - As far as I know existing Carsource searches should come through to payment exactly as normal. I've certainly not heard anything to say otherwise.

wolfies_wonders - cheers!

chrishogsden - As you mention, the dates displayed are estimates. From time to time, retailers miss their payment deadlines to their affiliate network. This means that the cashback is delayed by a month or so from making its way to us - and therefore your cashback gets delayed.

These situations are normally resolved within a month, but occasionally they can drag on for longer. There is obviously no need to submit enquiries in such situations - as all will get sorted automatically in due course.

Thanks for your signoff chrishogsden!

Economics
Olly - Thanks for the reply. Of course free is always better in my book - but sometimes it's a matter of simple economics.

A particular "co-operative" site offers £10 for the merchant "splash plastic". TCB offers only £2. This one potential purchase is a reason for using them - Even if £5 is gobbled up by the (yearly) fee that still leaves £5 - £3 more than offered at TCB.

I'm not saying there are many instances like this - it just happens I came across this recently. It may be an anamoly or perhaps the other site gets a volume based better cashback rate from the affiliate?

Other times a merchant might be on a competitor 's site but not on TCB - again a reason to look elsewhere.

I know many retailers have been, and are being added - but give me the same choice, and same level of cashback and you are right - it makes no sense to go elsewhere.
catnip on 15-Feb-08 21:58 expresses that...

ooh this sounds like it might be getting heavy....... just to add to the debate, as I am feeling in a bit of a devilish mood, it is my understanding that a 'co-operative' is an organisation that shares out its profits, I would have thought that any cashback site would have a prime interest in making money as they are businesses at the end of the day. I may be wrong of course.... :)
TopCashBack on 15-Feb-08 22:07 gives voice to...

Hi thepearce

I had to look up "splash plastic" then - we only added them a few days ago - hence the reason why we haven't worked out a better deal yet I guess.

You are right that they will have some retailers at better rates - and equally we have some. (Prudential Car Insurance or CD Wow for instance).

I guess my point is that for the 99% of retailers where the rate is the same - then we would love people to support us rather than any charging site. That way, we could work to get better rates across the board - and who knows, one day you might not feel the need to pay out £5 every year.

(Please understand of course that I am not in any way having a go - just thinking and wishing out loud I guess).

Cheers

Another option for the daily clickers:
Hi,guys,i have noticed a few disgruntled voices about the daily clicks reducing and thought i should share something.Don't know whether most people know, but if you sign up to littlewoods bingo, not only do you earn cashback, but they have a free daily scratchcard which pays a minimum of 10p and can be as much as £100.We have 3 different accounts from 3 different people in our household (cough),so,every day we get 3 free clicks (minimum 30p).Most times you win 10p,but occasionly you win other amounts such as 20p,50p,£1,£2 and £5 of which we have won all these amounts, but sadly never won the £100.The money soon adds up and once it gets over £10 we usually make a withdrawal,so it makes a nice little regular earner.Even if i only ever won 10p,i will still have £10 x 3 in about 3 months. You must always have a positive balance in your account to be able to use the scratchcard,so always leave at least 10p in credit.

Thanks Bazr! I, like many other TCB-ers I expect, have now had a look at the Littlewoods Bingo site. Am I right in understanding that I'd have to deposit £10 of my own money first to be eligible to play the free scratchcard game? Is there any way around this? I guess I could just deposit £10, add winnings to it, and then withdraw the £10 again...would this work? Thanks again for sharing your money-making ideas with us all!
bazwaldo_the_1st on 17-Feb-08 17:54 retorts...

Liitlewoods bingo
Yes,NicNocs.£10 is the minimum deposit, simply deposit the £10,play the free scratchcard, win 10p minimum, then withdraw your original £10,leaving you with a balance in credit enabling you to the carry on scratching on a daily basis.Of course you will not the £10 cashback on offer for littlewoods unless you play through at least 50% of your deposit within 2 days, which in your case would be £5.
Should be worth risking a fiver to get £10 back,as you will soon turn your other fiver back into £10 with the free scratchcard which will enable you to make a withdrawal.

British Gas
Olly, what is your interpretation of this statement about British Gas:
Only one energy and HomeCare application per household will be processed. Multiple applications are not accepted and may result on your original applications cash-back also being cancelled. Please note, in order to protect the quality of their signups, British Gas will be extending the time before confirming and passing over cashback on purchases - up to 120 days.
Are we to read that we can only ever make one application via TCB and therefore only claim one cashback. We can't make an application for Gas and then a few weeks later make an application for the homecare service?
Say,for instance i applied for gas, recieved cashback, changed suppliers again after say 3 months and then after another 3 months i apply for BG again,am i thus disqualified from receiving cashback again. It all seems a bit unclear.

Hi

Thanks once again everyone for your comments.

Cheers thepearce.. much appreciated (hope I didn't get too heavy - I'll try to lighten up a little now :-)).

Cheers steveee.

Thanks bazr. I'm not aware of this offering myself - but it looks like you've found something others are interested in.

rowanmoor - Thanks for the suggestion. It is definitely on our list to add an RSS list. This Blog is bespoke to our site - so such ideas don't 'come as standard' - but can certainly be included.

bazr - On British Gas. This is one of those times where it really is our 'interpretation' rather than hard facts - because we don't really know how retailers are going to respond to situations until they actually do take action.

This is one of those cases of not pushing it. British Gas have obviously noticed too many multiple transactions from some members on a cashback site somewhere - so now they are clamping down across the board. (Please note that all cashback sites have been told to display the text you refer to).

I would guess that if you genuinely are going to switch energy supplier and then sign up for homecare - then that 'should' be OK. I would also guess that joining British Gas again 6 months later would be OK. This is just my guess though.

The mention of applications 'per household' within the text you refer to, makes it sound as if some members have signed up multiple times within a short space of time - under the names of different people from their household.

The golden rule is to use the site for 'genuine' reasons - in which case it is very unlikely you will ever fall foul of any retailer conditions.

I hope that helps
Cheers
Olly

Cashback tracking
Hi Olly, is there anything I should do to increase my chances of a success cashback track? I always clear cookies and yet it looks like I've missed out on £6.50 CreditExpert and £20 HSBC credit card (credit card application was successful). Its sods law that my low value cashback always tracks, but when it comes to something significant, it goes missing. I know nothing is guaranteed, it just gets a bit frustrating after a while.

I SEEM TO HAVE A BROKEN LINK TO THE E-ON SITE ANY SUGGESTIONS TO SOLVE THIS
TopCashBack on 26-Feb-08 21:24 wants to make known...

Hi

EpsilonDraconis - Sorry to hear about the tracking problems.

All I can suggest is that perhaps you clear your cookies before clicking through to the retailer (although this shouldn't really be necessary on the whole). Then click through and proceed to purchase immediately and wholly online.

Some members use a different browser just for TopCashBack and clicking through to the retailers - that way, they ensure that their purchases shouldn't track to other websites. Firefox or slimbrowser have been recommended.

dallas - the link works fine whenever I test it...I wonder if you're still having a problem. If you are, then it could be that you have anti-spyware installed which prevents you from accessing the intermediate 'affiliate network' pages. These pages need to be allowed within your software as they track your clicks and award your commissions - ensuring you get your cashback.

I hope that helps

Tracking
Hi Olly,

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I always ensure I clear the cookies beforehand and complete the process wholly online within a short time period. The procedure I follow is. Clear cookies. Close down all occurences of IE. Open IE and then clear cookies again before clicking through and completing wholly online. Yesterday I did a click through on the BBC Shop (7%-9% cashback) and purchased a magazine subscription wholly on-line (for my mum for Mothers Day and have received an e-mail from BBC to confirm order) but as yet haven't had any tracking appear on TCB. I understand that it takes a few days its just that previous comments have indicated that it has tracked within 1 day. My concern was just that on clicking through it said the specific BBC webpage was not found. I tried several times but the same message appeared - it had clicked through to the BBC website, it just said the required page was not found. I'm just wondering whether I'm likely to miss out on this cashback because the link was possibly wrong? I thought I'd raise it here so you could perhaps check the link and stop anyone else missing out, if indeed there is a problem. Anyway, please don't think I'm having a moan - without websites such as TCB I would receive nothing anyway. I am extremely impressed with TCB and the fact that you take time out to communicate with people like me. Thanks again for your continued help. Perhaps it's time for me to use a different browser anyway as IE seem to have various security vulnerabilities.

Hi
Hi to all new members who have found us lately.

If you've found this blog - then you've found a pretty good place to say hello, ask the odd question and generally keep up with Cashback news.

Cheers

Thank you bazwaldo_the_1st for the tip about Littlewoods Bingo - deposited £10 this evening and won £100 - Topcashback or what! Will be logging in for the daily scratchcards too - lightning might just strike twice in the same place. This is a GREAT site. Blog is a fantastic way of passing on tips.

Payable Amount
I recently bought a DVD from Asda and the cashback promptly appeared as pending. It has since been canclelled. I've not returned the DVD so I've not cancelled the transaction. Can anyone explain why this has happened and how frequently I can expect it to happen in the future? The cashback amount was only 25p, so no great loss but I would like to understand.

Thanks

Golden Casino
Hello,
I'd just like to echo the sentiments on what a great site this is :)

I've just noticed that my confirmed payment from Golden Casino has gone back into the pending column. I know that the site is no longer available and am wondering whether this cashback is likely to not happen now? There's still a couple of weeks until the estimated payable date...

Why would items get put into confirmed and then put back into pending?

Cheer

Best place on topcash to get answers
As i can see that some on the blog have not answered.
My question is how long before you get an answer from missing com & how likely are they to be paid.

Payment
So far I have only made one purchase via the site. I have been waiting nearly 3 month for 'cash back' of £85, is this the norm??

CLAIMS DIRECT

djfraser68 on 05-May-08 12:22 responds...

Please drop the CLAIMS DIRECT advert.

Any advert that pops up and follows you around the page just puts me off the site completely, it`s not doing you any favours!
Otherwise everything is great, thanks for all the cashback so far!

Oh yeah, "Hello!" :-)
